Okay I voted yes, I carry a S & W S.W.A.T knife it says first millenium run on it. My best friend bought it & gave it to me one day when we were at a flea market. It is not as nice now as it used to be though. I messed up & carried it at work. Usually at work I try to keep a razorknife & a kitchen type knife available but sometimes when the pocketknife is all I have on me & I need to get something done it gets abused. I'm like most here the knifes purpose is as a cutting implement. Now if someone got me bottled up in a corner & it was all I had-well I'm gonna come out of the corner one way or the other.

I have gotten knife snobbish lately. I don't have any need for tactical knives due to my bone crushing right hook but I do carry a pocket knife. Up until recently, I always carried lock blade Bucks or Uncle Henrys or any of a gazillion of those serrated blade pocket clip knives with the little thumb flipper knobs and pocket clip (usually Smith & Wesson, Gerber or some Chinese CRKT thing). Now, I kinda like the old Case knives in various styles (muskrats, trappers, canoes etc) and rotate between them and a Buck 307 The snobby part is I only buy knives new or old now that were made in the USA. I do have an old carbon blade Sabre 614 (Made in Japan)though that I use when I don't want to risk damaging a Case or Buck.

Is anyone aware if it makes any LEGAL difference if you carried a tactical folder or a fixed blade hunting knife, dagger, or tanto? Same blade length.

That would vary by jurisdiction (California, for example, forbids the concealed carry of fixed-blade knives, while Oregon does not). The reaction of the officer would vary by the circumstances, and probably from one officer to the next. In general, if you've managed to arouse the suspicions of the police, even an innocent Swiss Army Knife can start to look pretty problematic.

Has "tactical knife" been defined? I carry a Leatherman c303, which has a three-inch half-serraded blade and a button for one-handed fast opening. I carry it everywhere, everyday and feel quite comfortable that I could use it in a defensive situation. Is this considered a "tactical knife"?

It looks like this:

Elfego, YES that is a tactical knife. As long as it's used for DEFENSE. (Great knife btw :) )

I don't know if you would call it a tactical knife or not...but my everyday knife is the Spyderco "Native".

When camping and in backwoods I have a couple of Bark River knives as well as a hand forged sheath knife I bought from a gentleman who hand crafts them in North Carolina.

Yes, a Benchmade Mel Pardue model with anodized aluminum handles
with an Axis lock, it goes anywhere I go anytime and when I cannot
carry it such as while flying, I am nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof
without it.

I'm glad I found this thread, I was going to ask what everyone carried, or if they carried a knife daily. I see it's all ready been addressed, I'm a little late to the party, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway.

Like the majority here, I carry a knife every day. Some would qualify as a tactical folder, but they are tools to me, used to open anything a knife can open and cut everyday things that need cutting. Which tool I wear depends on the plans for the day.
1. CAS Knife
2. Retirement knife - Gift from my wife, still gets used once in a while though
3. Main Big Game Hunter
4&5. Daypack - Backup/loaners knives
5&6. (ya I know 5 is on there twice) Fillet knives, one for salmon and one for trout.
7, 8 & 9. My first knives, an old camillus(pocket), a Schrade LB7(work), and a small Schrade Uncle Henry(gentleman's knife), gifts from my dad and grandpa
10. Bird Hunting knife, with a choke wrench and gut hook
11. Multi-tools, they're everywhere, these were the ones handy, one in every vehicle, one in a survival kit, one in the tackle box, one in the kitchen junk drawer, ect.
12, 13 & 14. These are my daily carry knives, still just tools. 12-Call these two my "Sunday-go-to-meetin" knives. Just nice knives for going out. 14. the Griptilian is my abuse knife, used for everyday work. skinning wire, cutting drywall, anything I need a knife for when a utility knife isn't handy. 13 - these two are my inbetween knives, they're nicer, so I don't want to intentially tear them up, but they are tough and up to the task should I need them.

Like I said, they're all tools, and COULD all be used for defence if a gun wasn't around, I'd rather have a knife than nothing at all.

i dont know how to vote. i make knives so i always carry one.

so the knife in my pocket serves different purposes but i like to carry a blade length that does it all.

digging out a splinter, cleaning nails, cutting rope. not very tacticool.

deffending myself, cutting a seat belt, breaking a window. tactical.

i could use the same knife for both so i guess put that vote wherever.

i am outta the service now so i dont think i will have the need to sneak up behind someone and slit throats so we can throw that out the window.

i get nervous about calling what i carry tactical in case i ever have to use it for that. its kinda like telling the cops "oh this is my varmit pistol" vs. "oh yeah officer this is my hit gun"

just dont wanna wind up in court with a prosecuter asking my friends if i ever refered to the knife i used in self deffence as a tactical weapon.

I carry my kershaw assisted opening knife everyday, as I work for a state office that prohibits ccw, and the walk from downtown columbus to my car is less than sparkling...plus you never know when you need to cut a piece of rope or open a package...everyone should carry a pocketknife

The word "tactical" has been so overused and misused, it has lost its meaning. An instrument cannot be "tactical." Only a person can be. Manufacturers have learned if they stamp the word, "tactical" on a piece of equipment, a bunch of rookie cops and mall ninja-types will rush out and buy it. As to the need to carry a knife when you are carrying a pistol, it is darn hard to cut something with a handgun.
