We went out to the Utah west desert yesterday to shoot my new LC9. First time my wife shot it. She really liked it. Unfortunately our regular shooting spot had some wicked ricocets buzzing by us from who knows where so we had to go shoot in a dustier spot.
As I was loading the magazine I dropped the LC9 in the thick desert dust twice! I wiped it off and shot it. It started jamming. I oiled it up and wiped it off and worked the action a bit then shot it again. Even though there had to be dust inside the mechanism it worked well. I didnt mean to drop it. My wife said, "Im sure glad I wasnt the one to drop it!"
I see her point.
But the unexpected resisence to such a nasty invasion of dust and fine sand inside the action of my LC9 gives me a whole new respect for this little gun.
No, it didnt like it but with a little oil it kept right on going. Later when I disassembled it for cleaning it was totally contaminated with dirt.

This kind of reliability could save your life.

Cool... there are worse things you could have dropped it in or on.

Yes there are certainly worse things to drop it in.

I worked on dairy farms when I was a teenager. If you dropped a small gun like the LC9 in the oceans of cow-crap typically found in the holding pens where the cows wait to get milked on a dairy farm you would certainly never find it again. :)
An outhouse would be one of the other places where you just might have to cut your losses and write it off should you drop it down there.

I'm more interested in the ricochets. Were they your ricochets or were you taking fire from other shooters?

Oh no. We hadnt set up yet. We were looking at the spot we usually go to and getting ready to set up our target and suddenly we get several close ricochets. I couldnt see anyone so we really dont know what direction they came from.

My SR9c and LCP were really nasty inside after a week of riding around in my truck for a week of off roading. That fine red dust is just horrible.

...then there was the infamous Ruger P345 torure test, where they cast it in cement, then broke it out and fired it repeatedly.

Good to know the reliability, in a life or death scenario...but would not fire it much unless I had to without thorough cleaning.
