well, i have one other 1911 and it is fairly old. made around 1928.
its a Colt and i dont like to shoot it that often for a few reasons.
1) it has matching numbers and i dont want to give it too tear it up (and yeah it is worn, been somewhat abused over the years, almost no finish left, but its still my first gun and i want to take care of it)
2) it has horrible GI sights that i cant aim with a darn, i more or less point it rather than aim it.
3) the slide slices my right hand when it comes back, i dont shoot it without gloves but i dont always have gloves on me..

so.... i am looking to pick up one for a decent price that is comfy to shoot and has better sights; one that i dont mind shooting a lot.
Ruger's new gun fits that bill but they are in high demand now and high demand leads to high prices.
i hope the craze dies down and i can find one for a decent price (around 600 bucks)
heck, my gun shop even told me that i should wait because they are selling them over MSRP, i have never seen a gun, let alone a Ruger, sell for over MSRP
heck, Rugers usually go for WELL below MSRP... so that should tell ya something...

all i have done is picked one up and i really liked it.
the only thing i think i would change would be a gold bead front sight and an adjustable rear (although i might not change the rear)

To the original question...why a Ruger 1911? Its all about name branding. If Ruger brought out a Hawkeye single shot pistol today (in a myriad of calibers) it would sell just because most people know what it is/was.
Riuger has built well over 25 million firearms today. Name one company that even approaches that (besides maybe the myriad of companies that produce AK-47's worldwide)

Hi,

I didn't vote--the SR1911 isn't certified for sale here in CA, so I can't even run down to the LGS to take a look to form an informed opinion.

But were I to take a wild eyed guess, I'd suggest the Ruger name and low price for a "Made in USA" 1911 would play heavily into people's choices...

Question is why are people lusting after it and then cant wait to get one? I got mine and wasnt really looking to buy that one when I did. Maybe since it is entirely American made might be the reason, or maybe because Ruger does make a good product, maybe its because they caught all off guard with the 1911 and it has cast the I got to have it spell on us.

I still want a Ruger SR1911, but still have yet to see one!

I bought a Remington R1 a few months ago, and have since then seen those become a lot more available. The Rugers still haven't become more available at all.

If I do finally see one, it'll probably be over $700, but I want it for closer to $600. I definitely want another 1911, and I want it to be the Ruger, so hopefully my dream will come true someday. :)

[quote="revhigh"]Please let's keep this civil ... I am genuinely trying to get an idea for the incredible demand for this gun ....

That is an excellent question. While I'm not sure I can answer it here are my reasons for the purchase. This was a first firearm purchase for me. Since I was a kid, pistol meant gov't .45, probably courtesy of the war movies I watched. I wanted AMERICAN made. Couldn't afford the big names, or the Ruger for that matter($700). The anniversary helped. It was Ruger's first and I was buying in the first batch. I figured pre the first recall for better or worse I thought that I might add to the collectability in a couple of decades. Feature wise what is not to like? Comes with a lowered and flared ejection port, polished feed ramp, throated barrel, no front slide serrations and no firing pin safety. I really wasn't thrilled with the stainless, but it has grown on me. I don't know why, but I lust for this pistol. I clearly have a unnatural affinity for this firearm. I don't understand it. I've taken up reloading to feed it. I like to clean it, shoot it and reload for it. God help me I am a complete slut for this pistol.

I just saw this poll today. I don't usually frequent this sub-category here on the forum but I finally broke down and bought a SR1911 out of the forum classifieds last week.

I didn't like the "I'll buy anything..." option in the poll, so I didn't vote. I will say that I'm a long time owner/fan of 1911's and when the Ruger e-mail showed up in my in-box I immediately called my lgs and asked him to get me two of them. I believe that was May of 2011. My lgs just returned from SHOT in Vegas and told me he still had no idea when he could get a gun.

I believe Ruger hit a home run with this gun. A 1911 70's Series, Beavertail Grip Safety, Novak Sights and made in the USA by Ruger with their outstanding Customer Service. Oh, and did I mention, at less than the price of a used stock Colt. For me, over the years, Ruger's Customer Service has tipped the scales in their favor.

That appears to be exactly what happened to me.

I chose #3. This is my first 1911 and I chose the Ruger because it had the features and price that I wanted. When I decided to buy, I looked at most models available. I like the finish, black controls, and rear only slide serrations on the SR1911, and the price is a plus. As far as the Ruger name, that just means quality and value to me but wasn't the deciding factor. The made in the USA also says alot to me. So far I'm very happy with my choice!

Your voting options weren't a good match for me. Over the years I've owned two Colt 1911's -- both series 70 models. They were fairly accurate (after I paid gunsmiths to fix their out-of-the-box 12+ pound triggers), but were somewhat finicky about what ammunition they would reliably feed.
My Ruger P90DC will feed/fire/extract 100% almost anything that remotely resembles a .45 ACP cartridge. I would not even consider another .45 ACP semi-auto if the P90 could be carried cocked-and-locked. Unfortunately, I have found that the world of double-action first shot/single action subsequent shots is not for me.
The older I get the more I prefer stainless to blue. When Ruger announced their 1911, it was a natural fit for me. .45 ACP, stainless, Ruger reliability, Ruger value. 100% American made. I have one on order with an out-the-door price of under $700. In May, I'm going to take a cake to my Mom+Pop LGS to celebrate the first anniversary of my order because it doesn't look as if it will arrive before then.

Glock makes a very fine weapon as well. I love Ruger and I own 4 of them including the SR1911.

Am I the only one who received his SR1911 as a gift? Considering that it came from my #1 son, it is probably the most expensive gun in my small collection. Let's see, there was the orthodontist bills, several dirt bikes and related doctor bills, his first car plus insurance, a college education (He was a professional student.) and the list goes on. It was a small price to pay for a great 1911.
