I have carried a pocket knife since I was 10 years old. One went with me every day to school. I have carried one almost everyday since then. I carry a Gerber with spring assist at the moment. I do not, nor have I ever considered my knife to be a weapon. It cuts up an apple now and again. Opens boxes, cuts paper, string and rope, it might cut a steak at camp. I strip wire with it, etc. One hand opening just makes it handy to use.
Almost everyone I know carries a pocket clip knife. I doubt than any of them even think about their knife as a weapon. It is just a tool that goes in the pocket at the same time the billfold and keys do.

I have never, ever, had to saw through a 6" hawser, and see no need for a serrated edge on a pocket knife.

Find an older Kershaw blur, also Gerber made some spring assisted with out serrations. I'm not a big fan of steak knives unless I'm eating steak :)

I reckon most folks who believe in the term "tactical knife" would deem my folders to fall into that category. I prefer to think of most of my folders as simply very sturdy, rather than tactical. My only folder that is strictly a weapon, as I see it, is my Spyderco Civilian, a bit delicate for a working knife, but suited for a narrow range of defensive tactics.

My daily-carry folder is a Tarani Master Model Karambit folder, the original model made by Blade-Tech for Karambit.com, not the current 5.11 version. The driver's door pocket of my car carries an old Spyderco Military folder. Much if the time, I also carry a Strider AR. All of these I consider very sturdy, more than tactical.

I agree so much on this point. This is a trend that really gets in my way when buying. I am always asking "ya got that with a fine edge."
I can see the web commercial for these "look Bob, with the fine edge you can cut a seat belt in a crash, sharpen a stick for hunting, skin the deer. And with the Ronco serrated part you can even CUT a TOMATOOOOOO"

I wouldn't call this a tactical knife, but it is easier handling than the larger Spydero Civilian:

The Spydero Matriarch. It is like a serrated straight razor and designed only to shred flesh.

I use to carry a Buck on my belt all of the time, but got into to much
trouble with it. Even though it was legal to carry. So I got a smaller
knife to carry in my pocket. Never leave home without it.

I didn't vote because MY answer is all day, everyday but not anything "tactical" as most people would define it.

I started carrying a Gerber FSII on my gun belt as a LEO over 40 years ago. It was in a well made basket weave sheath that nobody noticed. Lots of rope and seat belts and................

I also carried a custom much like a Randall #6 but slimmer in a sheath sewn to my boot top, just in case. In 24+ years I never had to use it. However I still carry it and most of my dress boots have a sheath sewn to the top, just in case. But then I also carry a boxes of small strike anywhere matches in my shirt pocket and a $100 bill folded up and stuffed in an Asperin tin in the watch pocket of my Levis. About 20 years ago the wife gave me a custom made "match box" made out of sterling silver. I've carried the same "tin" though not with the same $100 bill in it for 30 years. Oh and a small water proof tin with 2 days of medication in it.

Here at the ranch if away from the house I wear a gun belt and revolver. I also carry some kind of fixed blade general purpose/hunting knife on the off side. I used to carry a pocket knife usually a trapper or Improved muskrat but in the last 10 years have taken to wearing a Gerber Harsey Air Frame in my left Levi pocket.

Packing a knife has saved my life more than once. However it has never saved my life from an assault it is almost always simply a tool like a hammer or screw driver. In fact everything I carry is about survival in a harsh enviroment with there are very few people and you are usually on your own.

The Army was real serious when they taught us that a knife was worthless as a defensive weapon except as a weapon of last resort. The situations you would use one as an offensive weapon was really rare. If the blade was less than 6" long it was useless for stabbing and stabbing was more lethal than slashing. They also taught us how to defend against a knife attack, run like Hell.

I've cut the strings on a million hale bales. I have never cut anybody with a knife in self defense in 40+ years. But it might happen in the next year so, along with everything else it's part of what I carry every day.

I'm not sure if was legislative intent but as written the Idaho Concealed Cary Law is in fact a Concealed WEAPONS Permit. Anything defined by state law as a weapon is covered under it. They may not like it but that does in fact cover daggers, dirks and stilettos not just guns. The county prosecutor in fact refused to prosecute when I was charged so there is no test case but.................... If you pulled out a knife and stabbed an assailant you should be in no more trouble, legally than if you shot him under the same circumstances, "IF" you have a permit. Unlike many states Idahos permit does not require you carry a specifically identified gun or "weapon."

I don't do "tactical" anything.

I have carried a pocket knife ever since third grade. For the past twenty-some years it has been a Mini Buck locking folder with a 1-7/8" stainless blade and some kinda reinforced "plastic" frame. It weighs exactly one ounce, fits in the "watch pocket" of my jeans, holds a good edge, and is with me any time I have my pants on. It gets used a lot.

I'm usually carrying a Leatherman on my belt when at home here in da boonies, and it has a couple of somewhat larger blades in addition to the rest of the goodies.

On the rare occasion when I feel an actual belt knife is required, I wear a little 4" bone-handled item I bought for a dollar in 1957. Has a great blade and isn't too big to be handy.

"Tactical?" Not hardly. Just practical.

;)

As an electrician, I always carry a knife with me. While it is not a "tactical" knife, the sheeps foot or hook blade design with quick opening thumb stud could be an option. PN 44005. While not super steel, it can be sharp/tuff enough to do the job, and and if opened for small tasks, people notice.

Buck 110 everyday since 1985. Worn down to a Buck 75 at this point. I need to look into the lifetime warantee to see if it covers used/sharpened to death. Note worn not abused. Not tactical & not a weapon.

Whenever I see a knife with a serated blade I offer to grind it off then resharpened it into a knife. Ed

I've carried a knife every day of my life since I was six (except when and where prohibited). While on duty I carry a Benchmade Mchenry & williams folder. On my own time it's a common pocket knife, usually a Gerber LST or a Victorinox Swiss Army my kids gave me 20 years ago.

When I'm not packin' a gun, I have my CRKT satin Eraser with me. I carry it in a horizontal belt-sheath.

I read just the first page of replies, came away with, "every man should carry a knife". I agree completely. I can skip socks, or underwear. I'd not ever leave the house without a blade ! My at work blade is a CRKT with a PC 3" blade. Its big brother with a 4" blade sometimes gets carried. Most often though, its a Cold Steel 5" Voyager that is worn. There are times that I'd choose the blade over a firearm. Think elevators and small rooms, anytime you want things to stay quiet,etc.. My Granpa gave me my first knife when I was 4-5yrs old. I've had a blade class and am aware of the damage a blade can do. steve b

"Tactics" is the methods one employs while carrying out a task.
So yeah, I guess you could call my little pocket knife a "tactical" knife. Mostly though, it just opens boxes, trims gaskets, strips a wire now and then, or cuts twine. It sure aint for fighting. For that, I'd rather use a big wrench or pick up a piece of 3/4" pipe. Either of those are perty-much available around my job, which is where I'm ususaly "armed" with only my knife. .
