Hi folks,

I just got a new Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle for fathers day :D and I had to go out and just shoot it, well, cause its a new toy I had to get it out of my system. I will follow up with proper sighting and accuracy measument using the iron sights and will post those results here.

Initial impressions: Very nice rifle, solid, crisp trigger, weights under 7lbs and not unpleasant to shoot. My one complain is actually not performance related but the fact that the 10 rnd magazines are $70 a copy. I hope that they will come down in price but that is outrageous!

Since this is a scout rifle I'm looking for a scope with intermediate/long eye relieve that would allow for fast close target acquisition and also serve as an intermediate range scope (300-400yrds)

I am intrested in this Weaver Scope http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/74941-1.html.
I'm also considering the 1-4x24mm Millet DMS-1 Tactical Riflescope http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/53649-34.html

Has anybody monted any of these scopes on the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle? Any experience with any of these scopes? Any other recommendation for a scope for the Scout Rifle?

Thanks!

i wanted the scout type setup on mine but money (or lack of) dictated i put a 2-7x32 scope i had on hand on the rifle "until i had the money". actually love the performance of the setup so much i dont think i want a scout type scope anymore...

as far as mags go, seems like you can get cheaper ones that work. i actually was logging on to look for the model i need as i hope to order one soon... seems like it is an Accuracy International mag?

i also want to remove the flash suppressor and reinstall a thread protector in its place. that will serve me well until i get the money to do a sound suppressor. i dont really see the benefit of a flash suppressor for hunting.

love the rifle tho! it is probably one of my two favorites in my safe...

Joe,

Where did you mount the scope? On the Picatinny rail or the scope rings it came with? I might do the same thing you did and put a scope I have until I replenish the gun money account.

Also, let me know about the magazines. I want to get maybe 4 extra ones but not at $70 each. It would be less painful at about $30

Thanks!

See my thread I just bumped. Has a link to the mags.

Yes I removed the peep and mounted scope with the provided rings. Thanks

I went with a red dot, intending to replace it later with some type of scope. Liked it so much, going to stick with it! True, a reticle is finer than a red dot, but this is a close to moderate range gun so I can live with that.

Get this Weaver instead, it doesn't have the word 'Tactical' in it, so its $400 cheaper for the same thing.

Is that the super high dollar one I've seen in some of the reviews that was present at the gunsite school when ruger unveiled the rifle?

No, that is the normal Scout scope.
The one that I brought to Gunsite that is well over $3000 was their new Mark 8. performed perfectly, but after I got home, I carefully packed it up and sent it back.

Yea that's the one. It would give me heart burn having that thing sitting on top of any rifle I own. Ha

I agree that everytime they add the word "tactical" the manufactures add a huge premium to basically the same thing.

So I went to check out this scope but it looks to be quite different.
maginification is 2.5-8x28mm vs. 1-5x24mm
etched dual X reticle vs Illuminated CIRT reticle
handgun vs rifle scope

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Just got my latest issue of Shooting Times in the mail yesterday. Bart Skelton did an article on the GS rifle using the new Weaver Scout scope mounted on the rail. He seemed impressed with that scope. I still have mine mounted with the Bushnell 30mm 1x4 Trophy with #4 dot reticle. The last 2 weeks of unrelenting 100 degree days have precluded me from shooting any more. Bob! :)

My understanding is that there aren't a lot of IER scopes available. With the increase in interest in "scout rifles", this may have changed.

The 1.5-4X Leupold VXII that coyote recommended is an IER scope, but the two that you listed in your original post are not. (Intermediate eye relief is generally considered 8-9" or so. Normal hunting scopes may have 3.5-4" relief, and handgun scopes may have 16-18".)

So, my recommendation is to check the specs on the scopes you are considering for the eye relief dimension and make sure it is truly an intermediate scope. A handgun scope will most likely be too close to your eye for a full image, and a normal scope will most likely be too far away.

I have about 10 of those on my Encore and Contender pistols - they are a great bargain. Sturdy, very forgiving eye placement and clear optics. I've used them on a few scout set ups and they've worked fine. At about $200.00 I think they're really an excellent buy.

I put this one on mine: http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/weaver-scout-scope/. I really like it and it was not very expensive. It's perfect for the distances we shoot here in GA.

I was at a 'Ruger Factory Sale' in Jacksonville Florida at one of our larger gun stores. The CEO oF Ruger, Mike Fifer was unbeknownst to me behind the counter serving customers on a Friday night in May. He personally waited on me and showed me the Scout, the SR1911, and the SR9, all of which I bought. He told me that night, that they, Sturm Ruger, would be making there own polymer magazines for the Scout. He did not tell me how many rounds, but I am going to guess, the ten round and the five round. He said they would be way cheaper (He did not reveal the cost). He said to look for them on 'shopruger.com.'I have been looking and even e-mailed the customer service at Ruger to ask "When?", only to get a vauge answer, that they would be selling them soon, look on shopruger. That was over two months ago, so who knows.
On another note, if you are wondering what in the heck was the CEO of Ruge wasr doing in a gun store, selling guns on a Friday night in Florida, I came to find at a later time , it is Rugers push to sell one million units (guns) in 2011. If that goal is accomplished, they in turn are going to write the NRA a Million dollar chcek, so there you have it........
