i started my collection ( and shooting)with a handful of single shot .22's. Marlins, Jc Higgins, and a Sears brand and a few others that you cant read what they are because of age and rust/wear.

any way... a friend of mine gave me a 1980's 10/22. i shot it for a few months. hunted squirrel, pigeons, etc. wasnt getting results i was happy with.

so i scoped it and set it for 50 yds, then 75, and 100. i ended up with shot groups that could cover a 6inch circle at 100yds. so i ended up going back to my single shot marlin which could cover a dime at 100yds.

am i the only person who hasnt caught the 10/22 bug?
does anyone else prefer an excellent single shot over a semi or am i just weird? the quality of the rifle was excellent i just wasnt blown away with the accuracy.

just my 2 cents :)

Accuracy on mine improved after some trigger work (PC hammer and adjustable sear) to drop the pull to about 2 lbs and bedding the receiver and barrel to the stock. Still not a competition shooter but much better then it was. Some have found that just removing the barrel band also helps, doesnt really make a difference on mine.

Cover a dime at 100yds? :o

How many different brands of .22lr ammo did you try in the 10/22? You just can't try one/two brand(s) of ammo and say that the rifle is not accurate(some brands are notorious for not being accurate in almost any gun). Try as many different brands as you can to see which one shoots the best. All pistols/rifles both in rimfire/centerfire will have certain brands that they like better than others. I would then suggest(as mentioned before) that if you do find a round that the 10/22 likes, get the Volquartsen or PC target hammer to lighten up the trigger pull. Also, if you scope the rifle, either get a rimfire scope or a scope with an adjustable objective(AO) lens to eliminate parallax. I am not saying that the stock 10/22 is a target rifle, but it should(not always) get .5" to 1.5" groups at 50yds with ammo it likes.

?????

If you're looking for accuracy, get a cheap, used 10/22 - then change the trigger group, the barrel, and the stock. A dime at 100 yards? Probably not, but charcoal briquets at 100 yards about 9 out of 10.

Help! Inherited my Dad's ...he passed away in 1985 and didn't hunt his last several years --- this gun could be from 1970 or from any year until 1985. Can someone tell me how to determine the year it was made -- also, all those posts above about "ammunition it likes" --- could someone recommend a brand or two for someone just trying to figure all of this out?

This is all that looks potentially helpful:
Ruger110-04727

The scope is a Weaver

It appears in excellent condition...

If anyone knows the values of these, although I have no intention of getting rid of it, I would also like to have an idea about that! I figure first I need to try to find the year made....

At least it is not one of the ones made in China!

Thanks in advance!

If you can cover a dime with a 22lr then you should be shooting for some unbreakable records maybe try out for the Olympics and be a one man team. A bolt gun should be more accurate than an auto but learn to shoot it, piddle around with things and you will be just as happy.

My 1928 Remington model 12 pump 22 is the most accurate of the group of 22 rifles I have. A heavy barrel Marlin 70 comes in next. But they are all fun.
