OK, More Trout

You guys are asking for more punishment so here goes! This stream has more Rainbows & quite a few nice German Browns. The first photo is my oldest son Shane (Gunsmith) with a really nice, plumb 21" Brown, the others are a mix of Browns, Rainbows & Cutthroats that the grandkids & cousins caught, many of them in one hour one evening.
The very last fish is a 41" Lake Trout caught in a lake north of here a few weeks back, Jim you might call him TEXAS size!

I just had some fresh trout for supper night before last. Good looking bunch of fish!

I'm curious as to how you keep this place a secrete. Is it on public land or private? From the size and quantity of Trout along with the ease of wading I would think there would be a mob of people around. Looks like you and the family are the only ones around which is GREAT. Is it close to your house? I know I would probably be there everyday. Hell I would just put a tent next to the stream and live there

Jim, its some of both! A lot of the places we fish, 3, sometimes 4 different streams have access to them where anyone can go. In Idaho we have what they call a "high water line" which means if you stay in the river you can wade about anywhere as long as you don't get in or out of the water on someone's private land.
Other places it's to far to walk but because I keep the Rock Chucks under control & they let me & my family access their property & get to spots where others can't get to without a whole lot of wading or floating. And floating can be almost impossible because in many places there are fences that span the river to keep cattle from getting loose.
We do see some people from time to time but not that many. What's really interesting is, the best fishing is yet to come. October can be amazing on some of these rivers, but many people are hunting by then & I'm one of them. I'll probably be hunting deer & antelope today. Depredation tags for a farmer friend who owns 10,000 acres. Not a tree on the place, so long revolver shots!!!

Dick, are those big lake trout good to eat or do you just always release them?

Not sure, we don't fish for them right here, there are some close by but we don't normally fish the lakes. A little too crowded for us. River or stream fishing in the back country kind of gets in your blood.
I know lots of people eat Lake Trout but this one was released as many of them are. Some of you may not know it but you can't keep a Trout out of the water very long or they are dead! When you take pictures do it in a hurry & get them back in the water.

Lake Trout should be good to eat since it is part of the Salmon family. Think King Salmon same as Steelhead a Sea Run Rainbow Trout.

Fried chicken and waffles, and lake trout are a common sight on signs in Baltimore eateries . Not the same fish. Whiting caught in the Atlantic from what I understand. I'll admit the stores aren't generally in areas where I would stop to eat.

I have eaten many lake trout over the years. Now,, our local lake trout are not like those. Ours are a rainbow variety. Our land-locked lakes grow them,, and in the Jan-Feb timeframe,, they move into the rivers to spawn. We also have caught them while trolling in deeper waters in some lakes.

But,, the back country stream fishing is the best way to get trout.

Locally,, I know of a few small creeks,, where native trout grow,, and when I can,,, I like to slip into such places & catch a few,, just for a fresh dinner.
