My dad used to farm when i was little. He leased two tracts of land, one on his side of the road, next door to their property, and one across the street. He would farm one, and have cattle on the other. Well at around the age of 12/13, his tractors broke down and he couldnt afford to repair them so he sold them off and quit farming. A few years later he quit the "cattle business" too and gave up the leases. He got his insurance license and has lived happily ever after.

But i miss that land and wandering all over it!! Over the last 20-25 years they have been leased to various folks and all i can do is stand at the fence and reminisce of past days. Well recently the land across the street sold. A few days ago i was heading home and saw the new owner at the gate so i stopped to introduce myself.

We got to talking and i made the offer to help him with maintenance on the place just so i could get back on the place. He extended the offer to let me wander the place if i would help keep an eye on it for him. I was pretty excited at the offer and this past Sunday i took him up on it and got to wander it for a little while before the thunderstorm moved in. I felt like a kid again.

I wont get to hunt or fish here. I wont even ask. But just getting to walk around on that place again means so much to me.

This used to be a catch pen where we would round up the cows for doctorin. Hasnt been used in a while.

Remains of an old deer stand. I remember hunting that one once or twice.

This is actually a piece of old farm equipment my dad parked under this tree probably 30 years ago. He had no way to get it when the tractor broke down, so there it still sits to this day.

I have wet many hooks in this lake. A cousin and I were mud riding in his "monster truck", an old Chevy C10 on 44's, around the perimeter of this lake and got stuck once too. Wish I had pics of that truck.

As times change, property is sold or whatever,,, we lose things that were once taken for granted. I used to roam all over the mountains around here,,, and now,,, not possible. Between developments, changes in ownership, part being a state park now, (I can wander that somewhat,,, but not hunt it,) I find myself feeling the same way about property.
It used to be carefree hunting, woods bumming, & exploring caves. Now it's a gated off, or restricted area. It's sad when kids do not have such places to "grow up" in.

But when things happen to where you can re-visit such places, the memories are bittersweet. All is not lost,,, but it can rekindle good feelings & pleasant memories.
Looks like you get to do some of that now!

Looks like a nice place to wander around. Your story brought back memories of the farm and woods we used to tramp around in and ride dirt bikes on.

Awesome pictures! Cool memories. I went last month out to my old stomping grounds of Westcliffe Colorado and went to my Grandpa's old farm. Met the guy who has it now and he let me poke around the place. Played in the barn, sat on the corral posts, wiped a few tears and got some great pics. He even showed me some old branding irons in the corner of the barn and offered to let me take them. I let them lie as they have probably not been touched in 40+ years. Getting kind of misty again...... Thank GOD for a wonderful day and great memories!
