In the near future I'll be installing ambi safeties on both a Nightwatchman and a lightweight commander.

Any opinions on which ones require the least amount of fitting?

My gunsmith favored a Wilson that I had narrowed to be like a Brown Carry Ambi. There are one or two brands that are not retained by a tab under the right grip panel if that is a concern.

The one on the Left side of the gun.

I'm Left handed and I have one or two that are ambi . . . only because they
only came that way. I've talked with a plethora of Left handed people and
very few use the one on the Right side. Everyone else uses the base of
the index finger to activate/deactivate the safety.

If you only have one, then do what you want. If you have multiple 1911s
use the one that all the others have.

P.S. Being Left handed, it is far easier to activate the mag release . . . .
safely.
