I posted this in the Semi Auto section. but thinking I would get a little more action here, I am posting the same thing here.

So,,,,Is it feasible to convert a SR1911 from .45 ACP to 10MM Auto? 8)

You would need a 10mm "top half," and then you'd need to replace the ejector on the frame with a 10mm version. And you'd have to swap that ejector again if/when you wanted to convert back to .45. Makes more sense to just get a whole 10mm gun.

In the Ruger world the 10mm also has a ramped barrel and the 45 does not so another thing to consider.

Why? The muzzle energy and ballistics are similar. 10mm has more modern ammo available where 45 is pretty much FMJ; but not that big a deal.

It would be cost preventative considering Ruger sells a 10mm now. You may save a couple dollars but not much. Sell the 45 and buy the 10mm and you will spend less.

When I say save a couple dollars, I mean the price of conversion vs a 2nd gun. If you sell the 45 you will spend less in the fact you will come out of pocket less by selling the 45 than converting it.

Have you looked at your local gun store lately? There is a plethora of SD ammo in .45. Some of that stuff is tested to expand to 1" and still penetrate 14.5" in ballistic gel.

Breech face of a 45 slide is too big for 10mm. Extraction would be problematical.

I carried a couple of 10 mms in 1911 configuration, but when I retired from ranching and moved back to town, I dropped back to 45ACP. 10mm has too much horsepower for what you might run across in civilization. 8) :)
It depends on how you want to use the 10 mm. A 180 grain bullet is still doin' what a 45ACP is doing at the muzzle at 100 yards.
I flattened a coyote at 80 yards, put down a 800 pound heifer, and a road injured antelope with one shot with the 10mm. It's an awesome cartridge, like the 357 Mag, recoil, muzzle blast, and penetration become factors if you are in town.
