+P ammo made to SAAMI specs should be safe in any well made 1911, though I wouldn't recommend a steady diet of +P in an alloy frame gun like a Lightweight Commander.

For everything but your wallet.

By the time you get to a .45ACP you really don't really need +P.
If you still . . . really . . . want higher power levels, try 10mm.

It won't get a steady diet shoot my standard reloads most of the time.
Just thought they might be useful when Carrying.

As far as the 10mm goes I have plenty of calibers of handguns
to feed, another mouth to feed lol. Someday maybe. ps

:D

I hear that! I was thinking about the .357Sig until I looked at the ammo
prices. Most assuredly a "reloadable" caliber, unless you have Trump's
money.

As to occasional +P . . . . . . not a problem. :D

The beauty of 45acp is the soft recoil, it's natural return to aimpoint, combined with its stopping power with normal ammo.

Absolutely no need for +P in any circumstance, especially for self defense.

For bears ... Or mountain lions .... You need more. Like 10mm .... Or 454 Casull.

There isn't a .38 Special to .357 Magnum level of difference. The 1911 was proofed with pressure levels 25% over standard in the old, soft pistols after all...and +P doesn't approach that.

So, there is no concern...steel or aluminum alloy frame. The barrel and slide assembly contain pressure and recoil impetus...not the frame. The barrel and slide is the gun. The frame is little more than the gun mount.

Thanks for all the reply's I may load some just cause I can lol!
My favorite is 7.4Gr of Unique under a 185Gr Nosler jacketed HP.
Cranks out right at 1,000 fps in a 5" barrel.

FUN to shoot, and costs way less than 1/3rd of current new ball ammo.

No. Not unless you just want to.

Im non .45 owner. I question if there is a difference in standard .45 to .45+P. I only found one 60 fps more.
If the bad guy is wearing a winter sweater, lite jacket ???? Did I miss a load? Thats what keeps me from the .45

Everyone needs to make their own decisions on what caliber, +P,
non +P, weight of bullet, length of barrel, etc.

Bad mouthing a caliber you have no experience with does little to
enhance your knowledge.

This is a good example of how internet myths get started...or perhaps I should say that it's the result of being hoodwinked by existing myths. Either way though, you can bet your sweet bippy that even the 230-FMJ service load has a lot more power than it's paper ballistics suggest...and that most commonly available .45ACP ammo will shoot through more "stuff" than most people realize......

Point being that neither a "standard loaded" .45ACP, or it's +P counterpart, is going to care "If the bad guy is wearing a winter sweater, lite jacket ????" or not.
