Ordered a Ruger Precision Rifle in 308 today.

I decided to take the plung after reading the reviews so far. It looks like a great platform.

Can you guys recommand a good scope up to $500?

Me too.....I got one in 6.5 Creedmoor. Can't wait.

I hope that Ruger is going to be up for the demand on these rifles and that QC will be tight. It will suck if only the trick one's they sent the media, really have accuracy.

As far as the optics. How far do you want to shoot? Under $500 is tough. SWFA SS 10X42....Bushnell Elite 3200 10X40 Tactical or 4500 series.....Vortex Viper HS-T....Vortex Viper PST 4-16X50 2nd focal plane (more expensive but worth it. 1st focal plane even more expensive) ......Mueller 8-32X44 Tactical.

Buy the best optic you can stretch your wallet for. It will be worth it. Cheap optics are a money waster......because you will replace them at some point when you get frustrated with them. You want a zero stop, resettable zero, side parallax and you have to choose which focal plane you want. Plus reticle......MOA or Mil-Dot. Get a scope that is Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA. Seems everyone is going back to Mil-Dot in the precision crowd.

For longrange deer hunting, is 6.5 Creed a good hard hitting round? Or would you you stick with 30-06 for 100-400yd shots? If not only because of it's widespread use for decades. Buddy has a Remington 30-06 pump that squirrelly on accuracy. We suspect the scope/rings.

Those 'up to $500' scopes will do that.....grin

They look interesting, but it seems like they got the barrel lengths a little mixed up to me. My preference would be:

6.5 Creedmor - 26"
243 Win. - 24"
308 - "at least" 24"

. . .or just make them all 24 or 26"!

Yeah when I rebarrel my 6.5 it will get a 26" tube.

I decided to go with a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16x50. It was $499.

Good scope choice. I just bought my first Monarch 3 in 3x12. Super clear optics. Just told my dealer to hold one in 6.5 for me when they come in.

I think the gun is working pretty good. This is afte I sighter it in. I've put 100 rounds through it today with no problems at all.

100 yards with PPU soft tip ammo.

Looks good. The rings look high to me....might just be the angle of the image though. What are those...highs? Maybe with the next size down you could get the scope closer to the bore axis without the bell kissing the hand guard.

They are 1". Couldn't find anything else that would fit. Next size down (0.565") were too short.

I am looking at one and will start with a known scope off of one of my Ruger No. 1s with new rings just for laughs. They look like a good deal for the money.

just for giggles check the stock swing/fold release. Been noted that they have a tendency to stick and need to be hit with a soft face hammer to free them up. And check the springs in the adjustable cheek. Last one I saw one of the two spring was missing right out of the box.
