There is a Ruger #1 group on Yahoo. In their files section they have links to stock makers and others that offer services on #1s

For the yahoo group, you will have to sign in as a member to view their data. If you choose to do so, the wood links are under "files". Pretty limited and dated info for the most part. Not a real complaint, just the way it is.

just a few semi inletted stock links in no particular order............do a google or a bing on your subject, more will show up.

If you wish to select your blank and have it carved to specs, then I might suggest the search function on your browser. There are ton of blank suppliers and carvers out there.

Sometimes Ruger take off stocks are available at the custom guys sites, sometimes on Ebay or Gunbroker FWIW

Great American gunstocks also used to make them, but their customer service may not be up to the standards of the ones named above.

Not to sidetrack the conversation, but as Great American Gunstocks was mentioned, I am compelled to add, if anyone is even considering doing business with these people, please message me first. I had a horrible experience that had me looking for legal recourse, and plenty of others have experienced same. I won't go into it here, but contact me before you spend a dollar with that guy.

I mentioned several sites that make No.1 type gunstock sets or pieces. As mentioned there are lots of others, one only has to do a search and do some work on one's own. I suspect that there always will be people that have had a hard time with any stock vendor, and of course, those customers just looking for a new rope to share.

I have had nice stocks from the above vendors over the years, tis not to say, you will have the same luck or not...............you pays your money and takes your chances.

roofinspector, you're right, probably every stockmaker has someone who's mad at him, but Great American is a unique case. A little research reveals that websites like Ripoff Reports and various gun forums contain numerous complaints against the owner of Great American, and they all sound fairly consistent. I see there are nine complaints just on Ripoff Reports and none are even mine.

While I agree one generally has to take these things with a grain of salt, Great American's owner has developed a seriously questionable reputation for sticking customers with unusable products at premium prices. As I said, just beware of what you're getting into if you go that route.

Shooter: Are you looking for something other than factory wood?

If all you want is a replacement stock the factory will replace either the butt stock and/or the forearm. The last one I sent in cost $250 fore the butt stock plus an hours labor so, $330 plus shipping. The forearm was $85 plus labor and shipping. The thing is you will get cuirrent production wood and checkering. So if you have a 1st or 2nd genration checkering pattern there will be attempt to duplicate it.

As mentioned both the butt and forearm do show up on e-bay, Gunbroker and other sites but frankly they tend to go for about the cost from the factory.

There are several guys offering semi inletted including one that shows up on e-bay all the time. Of course that tends to be spendy by the time you buy a blank or semi inletted and then have the work and checkering done.

Butt stocks are interchangeable. Forearms fit for before and after mid 1984 as they changed the angle of the the front of the receiver. That said either forearm CAN be changed to fit an action. The post 1984 forearm requires some inletting and wood removal to fit on an earlier rifle. The pre 1984 forearm requires some fill to fit the angle of the receiver on a newer rifle.
