A while back I bought this from a friend, and don't know a lot about it. It's a tang safety M77, in 280 Remington/7mm Express. It has the camo laminate, and no iron sights. It's serial number is 771-763XX. Just kind of wondering,if it's rare, if it was a distributor special, value, etc. I'll try and post some pics, tonight when my wife gets home with the camera. Any help you guys can give would be appreciated, as Ruger Centerfire Rifles aren't my specialty.

Thanks,
Hauss

I don't think M77s were ever made with a Camo Laminate from the factory.

It sounds like the M77R model, or the standard model which would have had a walnut stock on it.

The 280Rem/7mm Express designation makes it a little less common and its already an uncommon rifle, although I don't think it truly fits the bill of 'rare'.

I have a .280 Rem in the MKII and I like it a lot, although I don't shoot it much.

Actually the M77 was offered from the factory with the camo laminated stock. I've seen 30-06's but never a 280. The 77/22 was offered in the same stock and is a rare bird but not sure just how rare the 77's are. There can't be too many out there...

M77R-DZ......DZ="Desert Camo" laminated stock in colors of light reddish brown, light walnut and tan.

Known in 270 & 30-06, but that doesn't mean that your 280 7MM Express isn't factory, as the 270 & 30-06 are in the 771-XXXXX SN range. Also reportedly 225 M77R-DZ were made for "ALL Sports" unknown calibers in the same 771- SN range.

Easy confirmation. Call Ruger EST, 603-863-3300 ask for records. Have your SN ready, they will need SN to confirm how your M77 left the factory. If it is a M77R-DZ I would ask for a factory letter (free) for future confirmation. It will be the first known to RENE in that 280 7MM Express caliber.

Let us know what you find out from Ruger.

308: Didn't it also come with green laminates in it as a woodland stock. I've seen 30-06s and 270s that way.

RWT

All info from "THE RED EAGLE NEWS EXCHANGE"

YES, the M77 came in:

RZ = laminated stock in colors of green, red and blue-gray.
VZ = laminated green.
BZ = two-tone laminated light walnut and medium-tone walnut.
DZ = Desert camo laminated light reddish brown, light walnut and tan.

They seem to be very limited production in. 22-250, 270, 7MM, 7MM-08, 30-06, 308, 338, and probably others.

Sorry, it took me so long to post some pics, but I've been a little busy around the house. I'll send you a pm with the full serial number, if that's okay.

I have two M77 .280's a tag safety model like yours and one in SS in the Hawkeye. I love them both dearly. The rifle is not rare and I am almost positive that is not a Ruger stock. It is a nice looking rifle and good catch. I hope you are reloading as you will make that old girl shine.

One question. will your rifle allow you to lift the bolt with the safety in the safe position or do you need to move the safety to fire to cycle the bolt.

After communicating with Hauss & Ruger, the above M77 was not shipped as a "DZ". It is/was shipped as a M77R walnut checkered stock.

Just so we are all on the same page, here are the models the Tang Safety M77 were shipped as:

At SN 79-50000 a modification was made so the bolt could be opened while the safety was on.

What would you gentlemen think the M77RL-DZ in 7mm-08 and the M77RLS-BZ in .270 would be worth? Both are close to 98%, no box.
