I've been shooting a pair of .22 ARs--a DPMS and a USGI M261 conversion in a dedicated "retro" build--for more than 15 years.

And for years before that, I've had one of the Italian Armi-Jaeger AP-15 lookalikes.

And how do yours shoot? I might really be interested in one of these conversion kits. It seems like a great idea.

And true, $199 for one magazine, but you can get the three magazine setup for not much more, $229.

I bought a old unused one for $130 with 3 (1-10 & 2-30) mags last year. https://www.model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=445

IMHO
I wouldn't use one of those conversions in a "good" .223/5.56 rifle. The clean up would be difficult and time consuming. I've had two 22lr dedicated uppers and neither was really great. After sending the second back for a refund, I've been thinking of getting a CMMG barrel & bolt set to "make" another. I certainly wouldn't spend as much for one of the .223-22lr conversions as a 22lr bolt/barrel set would cost since I already have 5-6 magazines.

The DPMS shoots great--an absolute tack driver. That was a complete upper that cost $400-$500 as I recall.

The .22 conversion in a 5.56 barrel, not quite as much. The bore and twist rate are both different between .22 rimfire and centerfire. Function is fine, but accuracy is "casual." I have one upper in which the .22 conversion will shoot around an inch, maybe a hair less, at 25 yards; in several others it won't do much better than 1.5" at 25, which I consider bad for a .22LR. (The DPMS will stay well inside an inch at 50 yards.) The .22 conversion is good for plinking and some combat drills; the DPMS will do anything any other .22 rifle will do.

Snake45: Thanks! I'm thinking of one of these for my daughter. But perhaps I'll just find one of the complete AR's in .22, like a Smith and Wesson. I think they have an M&P model dedicated in as a 22LR caliber.
