Greetings,

somewhere in the dim, distant past I recall hearing that MK 2 and later mags can be used in the old model standard auto.

is this true? I have one, and mags seem to be difficult to find.

TIA

MKII mags can be made to easily be used in older MKI's. All that is required is the reversal of the follower button to the other side.
This is only for the MK series & not the 22/45 series.
The MKIII has a notch that makes it harder to modify to fit the older MKI series guns.
Buy any MKII mag & reverse the button & all is good!

must remember that when you try and use the newer MK II mags, and swithc the button around,,,some of the early MK I ( and standard autos) especially with the A-54 frame, the newer style MK II button the head is very wide and may drag inside the frame of the gun itself ( grip frame) we just make the head smaller , turn it down in a drill motor and file it or use a drill press, or if you are GOOD, spin grind by hand,,,then it will work better...........

I couldn't get the Search function on the Forum to work.

Another way to go about it is to type "site:rugerforum.com MK magazines" or something similar into a search engine like Google. (I can't even remember what term I searched for... :p )

Not always true. Mark I/RST pistols can be subdivided into A54 and A100, based on the grip frame. From 1949 to 1971ish, Ruger used the A54 grip frame (unmarked, but so identified in the schematic). The magazine follower button was on the right of the magazine. From 1971ish to 1982, Ruger used the A100 grip frame and these are so stamped. The magazine button ships on the left side but can be easily switched. All of my Mark I/RST pistols are A100 so I use Mark II magazines as-is.

Oh, don't go by what you see in period Ruger manuals. This one labels the grip frame "A100", but it, the grips, and the magazine shown are clearly A54 style:

yessir, obviously that schematic ( drawing) is wrong being marked ( labeled) A-100 but what Ty and I had said above as to the early models is correct, you can switch the button around on the MK II mags and as I noted, except for times the button of the newer mags is TOO wide to slide easily in the A-54 frame (narrow groove) we been doing this since 1982 when the Mark IIs came on the scene, and YES , hold one extra shot and NO they do NOT "hold open" lock the slide back, need a LONGER mag follower in the early mags to go up against the face of the bolt, thus locking it back,,,trick the old gunsmiths did YEARS ago, well back into the early 1950s....... 8)
