I have decided I need a heavy barrel on my square butt service six... Only problem: who makes a heavy barrel and how much ? It is my EDC and I enjoy shooting the thing . I have often thought of transplanting a 3" hvy bbl from a GP 100 but I believe it is the wrong size. Any comments???

Didn't they make the Service Six with heavy barrels more near the end of production?

Service Six's are pretty reasonably priced so ...... maybe look for one that way straight from the mother ship?

The service six was made with a heavy barrel in the last year of production. I don't know how much weight it added over the standard 2 3/4"barrel. I found three a couple years ago so they do pop up occasionally.
Here is a comparison picture of the two.

My 1988 Service Six wears a "heavy" barrel, although it's not as heavy as the tube on my S&W 10-10. I've seen .44's and .45's with thinner barrels than that one!

My Python is on its last legs. My smith says it can't be rebuild again. My heavy barrel Security Six is on deck to take its place.

I don't think I've ever seen a heavy barrel Sercurity Six.

Would you have a pic by any chance?

mexicanjoe,

Why need a heavier barrel?

My first double action revolver was a Security 6.... bought in 1981

Same gun,different sites.

Barrel weight, not a huge issue on that lighter / yet sturdy framed gun.

The Speed 6 model rocks as one of Ruger's better designs.

If doing it for felt recoil.... ya might wanna PM. me

Recoil has never been a problem with any of my Security/Speed Sixes.

I just like the heavy barrel look and balance much better than the thinner barreled versions.

It's blued and was always intended as my eventual replacement for my Python when it finally gives out.
