How long has Ruger installed aluminum grip frames ? This new BH has it. First one Ive had. Last few BHs are SS. Then several 1970's model. Came with narrow black plastic grips. My Pachmayr's hide this frame. I know most of you put steel frames on. Guess I need to look for a steel frame

They've been using aluminium grip frames since the 50's in .22's, .357's, and .44's. The SBH went to a steel grip frame in, I believe, '59.

This is first Ive noticed. Old Army's from 70's. Aren't they steel? Then my SBH from 70's are steel. The last few I've bought are SS. This is a matte finish. This is the first blued finish that I've bought in years. Went on a SS kick

Blued Old Armys had alloy grip frames with standard skinny triggers until 1985. Then Ruger used blued steel grip frames with a wide slot and the wide SBH trigger, but smooth, not serrated.

I put this together for questions such as yours:

(Updated 2016)

Note: Ruger refers to their blue steel grip frames as alloy steel in their catalog, meaning Chrome Molybdenum (Chromoly) as opposed to alum alloy and stainless steel grip frames.

Blue steel GFs* on the following models:

We don't always go to steel, even on a custom. Sometimes we prefer the lighter weight of the aluminum parts. On this .44Spl by Jim Stroh, I had him bead blast the grip frame and leave it bare, while hard chroming the rest. I've got another I want to have built into a 4" .45ACP and it will also retain an aluminum XR3. Meanwhile, the 7½" .38-40 conversion will be all steel.
