Dave Clements builds .500 Linebaughs and marks them 500 Magnum.

Yes, and Hamilton Bowen used to call the .500 Linebaugh the same, however, in most cases, when someone refers to a .500 Mag, it is the Smith & Wesson they are talking about. Keep in mind there has never been a commercial firearm chambered in .500 Linebaugh.

"They get pretty close with the Ruger .480."

I have to respectfully disagree. I own a Super Redhawk in 480, and a Super Blackhawk in .480. I have also shot the .500 Linebaugh as well as the .500 S&W. The .480 is not "close" as it's much more recoil friendly & controllable.

Now that's a BIG "10-4"!!!!

I was thinking perhaps he'd seen one marked as such and was question the source or his memory. :D

I don't see how anyone could claim the 480 Ruger even gets near a 500 S&W. With a 400gr bullet, the 480 is down at least 300 fps. The 500 case is nearly as long as the 480 loaded round, plus it's bigger in diameter. The 480 is basically a 475 Linebaugh "special"

Let's not pick on SPBhawk. Notice I said I RESPECTFULLY disagree.
Those of us who have shooting experience can equate the differences in the two calibers, but maybe he was looking at the diameter as a comparison. .480 & .500 are "close" in diameter,,, but worlds apart in performance. And chet15 makes a valid point in the observations of the .480 vs the .454. I too have found the 454 seems to have a snappier & harsher felt recoil than my 480's. I own a FA in 454,,, and it's different than the SBK in .480 by far.

Again, Contender is "spot on"! The snappier recoil of the 454 has lead me to mothball my FA 7.5" in favor of shooting the .480 in Bisley and Alaskan configurations. My buddy's 454 Alaskan actually hurts my hand to shoot. Not so with the .480. And the 500 Smith (with 8 3/8" barrel) does not hurt to shoot (IMHO) due to it's weight. Of course, I may change my mind upon shooting this new (to me) SNUB-NOSED 500 Smith I just obtained!!! ;)

The 480, 475, 454 and 500L all come in real guns. Not cartoonish oversized misshapen novelty guns like the 460 and 500. ;)

Does Ruger build a gun chambered in 500 magnum?

Ruger did build a SA with a frame of sufficient size to accommodate the 500 Mag: the .357 Maximum. With custom 5 shot cyls, and barrels, these have been used as platforms for many big bore cartridges.

Conceivably, the Ruger Hawkeye single shot may be another candidate for conversion with a custom barrel.

LOL. Yeah, it wouldn't be any of mine.

But there's quite a few around already rechambered to something else or in such condition that all collector value is already gone. Sadly, many were rechambered when brand new just to sell them.

Just a couple of thoughts, the .454 will always have the old school cool factor IMHO.

I think it is funny when people want to have the biggest and baddest cartridge, then want to use a compensator.

If you really want the thrill of almost uncontrollable recoil shoot a s&w J- frame airlight .357
