Purchased a new SP101 2.25" DAO the other day.
It has been to the range once and carried a couple of times.

Last night a friend was looking at it (un-loaded) and dry fired it a couple of times.
Then he partially cycled the trigger and then released it without completely cycling/dry firing.

And the trigger locked up ! ! !

It's like the cylinder did not index properly. When the trigger is pulled it goes about 1/4 of the way and stops.
If you manually rotate the cylinder, in other words "re-index" it, the gun then operates properly.
But you have to cycle the trigger all the way thru its double action cycle to avoid this 'lock up'.

Is this a characteristic of the SP101 DAO? Or do I have a faulty weapon?

That is no different than in the DAO revolver days where folks were trained to stage the trigger and then for whatever decided to not shoot and simply let the trigger forward. It shouldn't lock up like that. So it sounds like that particular gun has an issue. You should be able to uncommit from the shot as long as you let the trigger forward before the hammer falls. The only thing it should do on a revolver is the cylnder will freely rotate a bit (since it is more than likely not locked at that point) until it locks back up like it should be. That happens by eiher giving the cylnder a small nudge with a thumb/finger or holstering usually will do it.

Short-stroking the trigger like that can cause the gun to lock-up. There has been a lot discussed about the LCR doing that. Almost any gun can jam if you don't pull the trigger all the way through.

If you are half way through a trigger pull and you don't want the gun to fire you can do as above or stick your finger in front of the hammer and complete the trigger pull, then pull your finger out with the transfer bar lowered.
