The very early .38s had a 1/16" shorter frame, if that makes any difference in say, conceal ability.
Otherwise, no difference in weight and size so the .357 gives more flexibility in ammo choice with no penalty. :D

357 without question, those that buy 38's live to regret it as they wish their gun could shoot 357.

My son-in-law has one in .38 and loves it...but I can't understand why he didn't get the .357. I don't recall, he may have gotten a good deal on a used one or something. I haven't shot it as they live out of state but he said it's a tack driver for having such a short barrel.

I've got a few that are 357Mag and one that is 38. Wasn't paying attention to all the verbiage on the ad when I bought it. I suppose if I bored it out it would run 125 grain Mags. Haven't decided to do that yet with having the others already.

I have both. If I were to just own one,it would be the .357.
I got the first year .38 just because. Good deal and as new. Just had to have it.
I play with it at the range sometimes. Super fun with Cowboy loads. :D

I have the .38. I wasn't particularly looking for the .38 but got a good deal on it used. I can see everyone's point about the .357. But how is recoil with .357? Recoil in 38 isn't bad at all and mine is also a tack driver. 25 yard shots are not only possible but fun.

.357 Magnum or bust!!

If the .38 were lighter, or shorter, or thinner.......or offered SOME benefit.
Being the exact same revolver....no brainer for the 357 mag!

My thoughts 100% I love a lighter 38 special, but can't see any point to one the same size and weight of a 357 magnum.

.357 Magnum, all day every day. I am still amazed at how well this little gun soaks up recoil of the hotter loads. I should have bought it years ago.

I have a 2.25 and 3 Inch both chambered for the 357 Magnum, and I do carry the 357 Mag 135 short barrel loads in them.

My brother has the sweetest SP101 38 Special I have ever had my hands on. Tuned to perfection. Gemini Little Wonder fiber optic front sight. Fancy Lette fish scale grips by Altamont. He is perfectly happy with it shooting 38 +P carry loads. I doubt he would carry 357 Magnums in it, if it would shoot them.

Since Ruger still builds the SP101 in .38 does corporate think they can capture a part of the Police back up gun market?
Yesterday I bought a LN used bobbed hammer SP101. Price was too good to resist especially considering the lack of used Ruger DA revolvers here and price of new ones is close to $600.
If you don't mind thread drift, how do you carry your SP101? I've had one or two in the past and wind up going back to a Det. Spec. since it's a tad smaller and I can't shoot .357 any more.

Thanks, Jim

Between buying a .38 special version and a .357 magnum, with no real reduction in size,
Why would you even consider limiting yourself to only a .38 special , when ya can buy a gun that fires both?
