So I bought a used GP and it is pretty shiny. Was wondering if it was one of the rare factory high polished units? Is there any way to tell? Would the high polished serial number range be posted some place?

It needs a new rear site too but is good enough for me.

Only way we could ever tell was on the shipper or end label should be a letter "G" for 'gloss'.
That being said, I;ve seen far too many over the years that were just simply "polished out" and I wish I had a nickel for every stainless gun we ever "polished" !!!! 8)

Bought used so all I got was the gun. I guess I could try to call Ruger. Think they would know? The polish job looks real good even though there are a few scratches etc. from use.

Yes, Ruger will know what model they shipped the gun as.
Here's what I have on those from the "Reference of Ruger Firearms":

"In the "G" high polish stainless steel models, only the adjustable sight GKGP-141 (known s/n range 173-40126 to 173-64287 - probably not more than 500 produced) and GKGP-161 (known s/n range 173-30000 to 173-65232 - probably not more than 600 produced) are known."

Mine is 173-07xxx so I guess it was polished by the previous owner.

Thanks Chet,
