I just picked up the ruger super redhawk alaskan today. I noticed that when the cylinder is in the locked position you can turn it ever so slightly. Is this normal?

Completely normal. Some will also state a rigidly locked cylinder does nothing to contribute to accuracy because despite precision machining and alignment efforts, there will always be the potential for one or more chambers to be ever so slightly biased to one side or the other of the barrel throat. This "play" when bolt is locked into cylinder is said to permit a bullet leaving the chamber to somewhat better align itself to the barrel.

My Ruger NM Blackhawk in .45 Colt has noticeable "wiggle" when locked yet it is super accurate with my heavy bullet handloads.
