Ones again I’d like to bring up the subject of Ruger adding a 9mm to the LCR line. In that the 9mm has usurped, not without reason, the 38 Special I think it would be very popular given the availability and cost of 9mm. Taking a stop further I’d also like to see a company like Federal or Hornady produce a 9mm Auto Rim. It would have an extra thick rim like the 45 Auto rim, use standard 9mm reloading dies and data, all that would be required is a new shell holder to accommodate the extra thick rim.

Cheers

The 9mm in an LCR is a tremendously great idea, and I for one would be first in line to purchase a couple!

However, I am quite certain we will NEVER see a 9mm Auto Rim cartridge offered. Why? Because it would be too similar to the discontinued 9mm Federal cartridge that was developed for the Charter Arms Pitbull. Great idea in concept until it was discovered that those same short little high pressure pills dropped right into, uh-oh, old break-top revolvers chambered for .38 S&W! Rimmed 9s would do the exact same thing, and the resulting ka-blooey would draw lawyers like sharks to blood.

The Israelis reworked some British Enfield revolvers (and maybe Webleys as well?) to 9mm using moon clips, but those are strongly built weapons. Quite a few of the older American and Belgian top-breaks are just adequate for black powder pressure .38 S&W loads. 9mm would likely turn 'em into self-unloaders!

Where the 9mm Federal failed was in using a standard thickness rim. The 9mm Auto Rim would have a rim too thick to close in break action of swing out cylinder guns chambered in 38 Special or 38 S&W.

Cheers,

I would be all over a 9mm LCR. I love my 38 LCR but would prefer to not have to stockpile another caliber.

Charter Arms makes a 9mm, and for that matter a .40 S&W as well.
All stainless steel and at 22 ounces heavier than the LCR.

I like the low cost of the 9mm and such a revolver is indeed tempting to pair up with my Glocks, but I prefer revolvers with straight walled rimmed cases that are easy as pie to reload.

I am confused. What will the 9mm do in a LCR that the 357 magnum will not? A 9mm LCR would have to be in the steel frame so it would weigh the same as the 357 version. You first say you want it because of cheap 9mm ammo, but then add you want a special case to be created for it, and you will be up to a dollar a round for factory ammo. This does not seem to make sense. Add to this the fact that the 9mm does not extract well in the S&W guns that were made for it some years ago (all with steel frames I might add) and did not sell well for at least partially this reason. (I had one and extraction was a BEAR, not to mention recoil)

Ruger is touchy about extraction problems and they have said they will not be making a LCR in 22 magnum for this very reason.

Can someone tell me what a special rimmed 9mm round instead of an existing rimmed round that is even more powerful and offers light 38 capability for low recoil use will do for you?

By the way, one poster above mentioned the issue of a rimmed 9mm round dropping into a 38 S&W chamber. Are you folks aware that the 38 S&W ammo will work in the previously mentioned 9mm 5 shot S&W (was it a 940????) ? I used up all my 38 S&W factory ammo I had around the house in that gun and the little 38 S&W made it a nice shooting gun. If I was going to reload for that gun I think I would use 38 S&W shell holder and brass and 9mm dies and go to town with a rimmed 9mm.

If you reload 9mm for an auto and get a batch that doesn't feed well they could be fired in a revolver. That is another reason for a 9mm. I would like to see the 9mm and some other calibers added to the LCR line. Only I would like to see barrels and cylinders only. The LCR is a modular system so why not just sell componets. I would like to add a 4-6" barrel with adjustable sights to my LCR 38.
