See my post wondering if my GP100 cylinder is out of alignment with the barrel. Being as I noted that it shoots fine, it was the consensus here that I should forget about it and enjoy shooting it. But, this gun has now become my favorite shooter and I couldn't stop wondering what was causing the high pressure sign on only half the cylinders. So, I called Ruger. The tech told me to stop shooting it and promised a UPS pickup at my door tomorrow. I was quite impressed as I didn't even ask about a repair, I just wanted their opinion of what might cause what was happening. I'll post progress as anything significant happens. There is a silver lining here. I'll be without my favorite plinker for a few weeks so that means I'll have to go buy a Bisley flattop 44 Special to keep me entertained while it is away!

I agree with Ruger. Just because an out of alignment gun shoots OK doesn't mean it's safe. Glad they're going to take a look at it.

That is why you don't ask these kind of questions on the I-net.

Usually, I would agree about asking "those kinds of questions" on the I-net. But. This forum is different. It is mostly populated by people that really own Ruger guns, shoot them a lot, and know what they are talking about. Also, this forum is unique in that everyone seems to be able to communicate in a civil manner. Differences of opinion are usually resolved in non confrontational, but interesting debate. Showing an anomoly to all the people who visit here often results in hearing from someone who has experienced the same problem or event and has valuable input to provide. When you have a resource as good as RugerForum.com, and you are a Ruger enthusiast, you USE IT. For all I know, when I get the gun back it will be returned with a comment from the tech "gun shoots fine, go shoot it".

Can I ask what the over pressure signs were? Bulging primers?

I do not mean to imply the members here are less than knowledgeable, but the kind of question he originally asked was one that Ruger or a gunsmith should answer. These kinds of questions are best addressed to the Manufacturer, in this case Ruger.
I did not mean to step on anybodies toes.

I have seen lots of primer strikes that were not dead center on the primer. Doesn't mean there is an alignment issue or a high pressure situation. Doesn't mean there isn't one either. The best advice was to check the cylinder/barrel alignment with a range rod or visually. There really was no 'consensus' as there were only a few comments. 8) 8)

Don't suppose you mic'ed the throats on all the chambers?

Or tried 'dropping' a fresh bullet through them to see if some of the throats were tight?

Tom, here is the original post
http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=150729

If you click the link, you will see the pics of the primers. The centered strike seems to be more flatted and the grain of the frame face seems to be imprinted in the primer. The off center hits (from the other side of the cylinder) seem still rounded with no striations. I took this to be weird more than dangerous. My inquiry to Ruger was just that--an inquiry. But, they were very quick to request it be returned for a check out.
