My first post but I have been lurking for a while now.
Back at the end of May I bought a brand new sr9.
I have put about 1200-1400 rounds threw the gun in that time.
After every target practice round I cleaned the gun.
I didn't see any issues till today. Upon field striping the gun and in the process of cleaning the gun I was scrubbing down the recoil spring with my copper brush when I noticed what appeared to be shavings.
So after wiping away all the oil that was on the spring this is what i found.
Question is, is it normal or do I need to call Ruger for a new recoil spring

well I just got off the phone with ruger and according to them that is normal... I don't think so.
I offered to email the photos but he said it wasn't needed.

is it me or does it look like the spring is on a wood dowel or something?
the ruger tech said it was metal but i think it's a plastic.
I'm off to my local gun shop to see what he has to say

back from my local gun dealer, from whom i bought it from.
He too thinks it's either kevlar/carbon fiber not metal as suggested.
He doesn't see an issue with it either. :?
He said it's not bad, but keep an eye on it and if it got worse to contact ruger again an insist on a new recoil spring.
EDIT:
called ruger again and talked to another man. He told me that the spring is spring steel and the guide shaft is a polmer.
This is the first gun to use such a recoil spring in their line up. All the other recoil springs have an alum guide shaft with a spring steel.
This is why the last man I talked to was a bit confused.
He said keep an eye on it and if it gets to a point where I don't think it is no longer safe to contact the parts department and they will send out a new recoil spring.

I was looking on rugers web page for an email address I could question this problem and send photos along with the email. I didn't come across an address that doesn't require a case number to be sent along with it. So with out a case number I can't send an email.

Can anyone help me with an address I can send an email to?

EDIT:
i found out that i didn't need a repair number it was just "suggested"
So i sent off a message with direct links to the photos

So I sent off the email last night. Got a reply today asking for my shipping address so they can send out a new recoil spring.

So I guess it was the photos that helped prove my case.
When the new one gets here I will let you all know.

Do you oil your spring and guide rod when you clean it. It looks bone dry.
Read my first post again, second to last line.
Yes the guide rod and spring always had oil on it.
I removed the oil so the damage would show up better in the photo.
The new one is currently soaking in oil LOL
