What is the difference in the Ruger P89 magazines between those with serial numbers above and below 70000?

Available Ruger OEM magazines only fit SN above 70000.

Mec-Gar doesn't make this distinction in P89 Magazines. :?

If I remember correctly the difference is the shape of the magazine retention hole.

The magazines for the newer P89s will work in the older pistols. But, the older magazines don't always work in newer pistols.

Years ago I remember reading a thread on how someone modified the magazines to work but I can't recall where now. It's probably more tinkering than most would want to do anyway.

Actually it is the distance from the top of the magazine to the hole.... at least with the two I have.

Old style mag's is 1.68
New style's is 1.7

So the difference is actually where the magazine lock pin is located on the two pistols... I fixed an older P89 by taking the pin out (this is a real pain) and filing about 2-3 hundreds of an inch off the top.

Oh, and the older mags will work in the newer pistols anyway. they just extend out of the mag well a tad.
