I have some vintage .22 boxes with the lids taped shut with scotch tape.

Any ideas on how to remove the scotch tape without taking the top layer of the box with it?

Well..........just for statistical significance..........Goof Off removes scotch tape just fine, but also dissolves blue ink off of Federal Cartridge boxes. :(

Goo gone is so greasy too.
We've always used lighter fluid (butane). Once it hits the glue it disolves it and scotch tape comes right off. The other good thing is that it evaporates completely so no mess.
And for those box end labels that are put over the top of printed box ends, just put a little butane on the label and you'll be able to see all the printed wording underneath. Once it evaporates, no harm, no foul.
