I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that this (barrel, anyway) started out as a Lyman centennial and was cut and had the front sight added. Or it could be one the 40 or so unmarked (unetched) Lyman centennials. It would be a shame if it was one fo these and had the barrel altered.

Whatever the history, that wood is great!

OK, what is the story; don't keep us in suspense!

I think this 1H .45/70 is the "real deal", based on conversation with Rowdy.
He has not let you in on the full story yet. The rifle has a good pedigree and explanation for the front sight. Wood like that did not get put on by accident!
