I passed on this but probably shouldn't have. The blue is pretty nice , grips have some dings but is HAS BEEN converted , no parts. Located in MA I could have bought it for 395. I have the info if someone else wants it

I was always under the assumption that NO 3 digit short barrel guns were made......or convertibles.....what do the 45 experts say???? RR.

RR, I think the consensus is that the short barrels didn't begin until the 45-00500 range.

golferboy426..... :D....... I bet that there wouldn't be a 9mm cylinder with it either......

There were a few convertibles, both barrel lengths under 45-01000.
45-00085 is supposed to be the earliest convertible.
I wouldn't doubt if these early convertibles were later shippers though, probably 1971 and later. The first 1,000 guns shipped, maybe a few more, went out in 1970.

Well I'll be......I had this very discussion in Tulsa on the second floor of the Sleep Inn many years ago and everyone assured me that no short barrel 3 digit guns existed......guess I will need to start looking....RR.

Groan,,, another rare one to chase,,,,!
Actually I seem to recall reading this tidbit or hearing it somewhere,, and discounted the info thinking "I doubt I'll get that lucky." That,, and knowing if I get ANY 2, or 3 digit guns,, I'll be keeping them anyway.

I have to say that, in over a decade of chasing OM 45s, I have NEVER heard of, or seen, a 3-digit gun in anything other than a BKH45 (ie single cylinder 7 1/2" bbl).

Even all of the late shipped 2 and 3 digit guns that I have either owned, handled, hear of, or seen are all BKH45s. I have a couple 2-digit late shipped guns (1972) in my collection now and they are BKH45s.

Just my $0.02

I, for one, would be very curious to get actual serial numbers of any 3-digit guns that are convertibles or 4 5/8" bbls, just to have them for my records on OM 45s.

I have the following noted:
BKH44X 45-00540
BKH45X 45-00738
BKH45X 45-00830

In addition to these, JD noted in his ''63 to 73 book I believe, that 45-00085 and 45-00111 were the earliest convertibles made, I assume different barrel lengths but didn't write those down. I need to look at that again.

A couple "Almost under 45-01000" are:
BKH-45X 45-01361
BKH45X 45-01423

As mentioned, I would just about be sure that these examples were shipped at least a few months after they should have been (early frames finally going through the process).

Hmmm...I also have noted 45-00915 as being BKH44, reported by Fred Fischer. Our BKH45 is 45-00916.

Thanks, Chad. This is helfpul.

85, 111, and 540 are all BKH44Xs and all three shipped in Nov, 1971.

Those 3 shipped almost a year later than they "should have". This is consistent with my observations that convertibles really didn't start appearing until about 5-6 months after the 45s were introduced (ie April/May, 1971). My earliest convertible is 2638, shipped in May, 1971. There could be some sooner, of course, but it took Ruger a few months to get convertibles out the door.

All of the other ones you have listed will letter only as BKH45s...not convertibles:

738 - BKH45, 1/71
830 - BKH45, 1/71
915 - BKH45, 1/71
916 - BKH45, 12/70 (first month gun!)
1361 - BKH45, 12/70
1423 - BKH45, 12/70

So 4 BKH45 x's and ONE or two BKH44 x............guess it is a little like that needle in a haystack story....lets just say not many are floating around.....looks like I am NOT the ONLY GUY that doesn't have one    guess I will not worry TOO much about it then....see ya RR.

Yes, confirms my thoughts as well.

Wow! You got dates on those quick!! Is your 45-02638 a BKH44X or BKH45X?
Yes, dad's had 45-00916 since it was bought new on 1/29/71 at the Timberline Sporting Goods gun shop in Perry, IA. Its lucky that it was set back for him under the counter as thieves pretty much cleaned out much of the rest of the store just before dad picked it up.
As to the other 5 non-convertibles you got ship dates on, thats a great example of Ruger's "last in, first out" shipping method.
