Does anyone know the s/n ranges or numbering protocol used? Supposedly, there were 674 4 3/4"ers and 753 5 1/2"ers made. The lowest numbered 5 1/2"er I've been able to confirm is 58-09151. THIS ONE, currently on gunbroker, is s/n 58-09847, which is a range of 696 guns, leaving only 57 guns out of that range. The seller of THIS ONE, also currently listed on gunbroker, claims the s/n is 58-10287, which is WAY outside the range I've ever encountered for a 5 1/2" model. Rebarrel? Parts gun made up after the main production run?

Here's what I have on those from the Reference of Ruger Firearms:
KBNV-38X (Ruger model 0503) and KBNV-385X (Ruger model 0504) Special Distributor model .38-40/.40 S&W convertible. Known s/n ranges 57-95373 to 58-71249 (KBNV-38X) and 58-09110 to 58-49342 (KBNV-385X). A total of 736 KBNV-38X (with wood grips) and 831 KBNV-385X (with wood grips_ were shipped to Davidson's (AZ) from 2001 through 2004.

KBNV-38X (also Ruger model 0503) Special distributor model with simulated ivory grip panels. 133 produced. The first 133 guns shipped of this model in addition to the unusual gun described in the paragraph below were shipped with simulated ivory grip panels installed on the gun in error. These revolvers were supposed to have had standard rosewood grip panels. They are verifiable only through Red Eagle News Exchange records. Known s/n range 57-95365 to 58-08622. Very scarce.

Don't worry about taking a high and low to figure out Ruger's production quantities of certain models. All Ruger models are for the most part produced totally at random as evidenced by the numbers above. :)

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but can this gun shoot 10mm? It was my understanding that the chambers in 40 cylinder are cut to the proper depth to be able to use it without moonclips. If this is the case. 10mm would not fit. any input?
