Yesterday I came across an old model single six with a 4-5/8" barrel. Wood grips, one cylinder, with a 20- prefix serial number. Is the 4-5/8" barrel rare in the 20- prefix range?

Yes, it is, however the vast majority were shipped as convertibles. I'd certainly pursue some "provenance", ASAP.

All 4-5/8" or 9-1/2" OM Single-Sixes with serial numbers in the 3xxxxx range or higher are convertibles. All 6-1/2" guns 4xxxxx and higher are also convertibles.
The only LR only guns offered to 1972 was the 5-1/2". And Mag. only 6-1/2" guns are thus far not known entering the 4xxxxx range.
