Just a general question on when a particular model became available: The short barreled (4.62") SBH in .44 mag with the round trigger guard (sorry, I can never keep the grip frame nomenclature straight). Currently model #S-458N. Has this "always" been available, as in since the OM days, or is it relatively new? For some reason I thought it was a newer offering, but then I saw a .45 Colt OM in the same barrel length (yes, I know that's not the same thing...).

There are no 4 5/8" or 5 1/2" Old Model Supers. I think the first were in 1973 :?:

The first 4-5/8" Supers were a "contract gun" for Ruger Distributor Williams Shooters Supply. They were so popular that Ruger put them in the catalog.

The 5-1/2" version preceded the 4-5/8" by a few years, IIRC.

Both models sport the XR3-RED sized grip frame, albeit in steel and not aluminum.
