Today at a local show, a guy walked in with a boxed OM .30 Carbine Blackhawk. His late father had bought it new in the 70s, he said. The box was serialed to the gun, properly labeled, had all papers, but the frame had an OM .45 serial number and was marked as a .45. The SN on the box matched the gun. The cylinder and barrel were .30 Carbine and appeared to be factory Ruger. The gun was in unfired condition.

We recommended he call Ruger tomorrow and have them check the records. Either someone with some time on their hands took an OM .45 and made it a .30 Carbine and added the SN to an original .30 Carbine box, or someone at Ruger made a boo-boo. He wasn't interested in selling it. He wanted to know what the deal was on it.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

well from what we've seen and heard, most likely whatever was written on the end of the box would have been what was "recorded" at shipping, building it ( the day books ) should be another matter...yes, a call would be in order.
Other wise, we'd guess it was just re barreled /chambered, easy enough to do and has been done , and often.................hardest part is re' marking (stamping or rollmarking), the "new" info on the side of the frame...the old marks have to be removed first, and the gun completely refinished......

and NO< it would not be the first gun that left the factory with the 'wrong' markings on it...........................

Page 43 of Bill Ross's book "Flattops & Super Blackhawks" shows a BN-36 with a New Model .45 Blackhawk rollmark on the cylinder frame.
I also know of a Super Blackhawk, serial number 4141 (large serial numbers!) that has a .41 Blackhawk rollmark on the left side of the cylinder frame. In this case, the serial number would have also been intended for a .41 Blackhawk. But the gun is chambered for .44 Mag and the barrel is 7-1/2".

Saw a 30 prefix .357 in Yuma last weekend with NO roll mark at all on the left side of the frame and the serial number as normal on the right side.
