I'd like to do a little reshaping of the grips on my BisHunter. It has the "black" laminate style. I'd like to retain the current look. How does a guy go about this with these laminates?

I thinned my Bisley grips by making a wooden jig to lay the grip in and then I sanded down the thickness with a sanding block. This left a flat on the grip that I shaped into the rest of the grip. A broom handle or large dowel is useful to wrap sandpaper around for the interior shape. :D

What about retaining/maintaining the finish on these Laminate grips?

That laminated wood is totally impregnated with resin. It can be just polished to a glossy finish after sanding and final sanding with about 400 grit paper. Work it down to where you want it and using finer and finer grits of sandpaper to remove previous grits scratches until it is super smooth and just do a final buff with a buffing wheel or course cloth and a little furniture wax. the wax is not even really needed.
