What's lightest and heaviest you'd go. Trying to keep recoil down a little. Even considered lead round BP balls. Lol.
Thanks. The balls are about 180 I'm thinking around 950 FPS to 1100 FPS 340 to 440gr. But I'd prefer 275 grainers if they wouldn't be too short. Shot lots of 240 and 320 gr in 44 m 45. Just no hotter than that! Lol — barrel is five inch jack worked the black micarta grip to my hand and slapped a muzzle band at the front sight. Used freedom arms sights. I paid a little more than that bfr jrh out there in production now. Shoots well though. My gun appears to need glasses though.

If your gun needs glasses then try an ultra-dot you will be surprised how much better things will be. Get the Gen 2 with a 2MOA dot
Use a 400gr or a 440gr cast lead with 10grs of W231
If that is tooo much then drop back to a smaller caliber.

500JRH
400gr WFNGC
Trailboss: 8.0 - 10.0 (~750-850fps)
Titegroup: 11.0 - 13.7 (~1064 - 1192)
Longshot: 15.0 - 17.6 (~1187-1310)

440gr WFNGC
Trailboss: 6.0 - 8.0 (~600-717fps)
Titegroup: 10.0 - 12.5 (~977-1097)
Longshot: 14.0 - 16.5 (~1119-1226)

Right now one of my favorite loads is the 440 WFNGC over 15.5gr of Longshot. That said, if you are looking for a reduced load, this isn't exactly it. By my uncalibrated recoil-o-meter it feels like 2-3X the recoil of a full blown 44mag but comes across as more of a very strong push.

I also agree with cherokeetracker. The 500 JRH is not what I would ever call a soft shooting caliber nor would I suggest it to someone who is at all recoil sensitive. It is darn close to as much boom as you can fit into a standard length single action cylinder. That said the BFR with a Bisley grip is about one of the best configurations I have seen at soaking up the recoil of the really heavy loads.

Optics wise, I will also 2nd cherokeetracker on the UltraDot. It is one optic that will put up with the abuse this caliber will dish out. I also have been pretty happy with the MRDS type sights like a Trijicon RMR and Leupold DeltaPoint. Raptor Engineering https://raptor-eng.com/raptor_sight_mounts_004.htm makes a mount for a Ruger revolvers (flat top mount) that will work with the BFR.
