I live in Northern Calif. close to the Oregon border, (Dunsmuir, near Mt. Shasta). I can't order ammo on the internet any longer so I go into Klamath Falls and sometimes Medford to get it.

I'm looking for cheaper .45 Colt range ammo and the 12ga. Mini shot shells. I can't find ANY .45 Colt or the mini shot shells anywhere in Southern Oregon. Any of you folks that live there give me a lead? Thanks much!

Several choices for you with the main one....start reloading if they allow you to do that there.
Here in Va. .45 Colt is expensive when you find it and that's why I reload it and others plus you
can load it the way you like it!

As moving isn't usually an option,,, and some folks aren't shooting enough to make reloading a practical choice,, I'll offer this.

Where you usually shop for ammo,,, create a good, working relationship with the owner of the store. Ask them to order the ammo you seek. Even leave them a deposit if necessary.

However,,, a lot depends upon the store. If you are dealing with a big box store like wally world,, that won't work. Also, if you only buy small quantities,, a small dealer has to buy in case lots,, so it may be cost prohibitive.

Inexpensive ammo only exists in places where freedom of commerce is allowed. When you have several businesses that sell the same types of products,, then costs are competitive. (It's called capitalism.) In places that have restrictions,,, (California,) things cost more because of the lack of free enterprise.

For 45 Colt ammo, quite often none of it is " cheaper .45 Colt range ammo " no matter where you go. UNLESS you happen to have a large SASS club nearby & even then,,, most folks reload.
Reloading is the ONLY way to achieve good ammo, at a very reasonable expense.

As for the 12 gauge stuff,, not as many sellers or reloaders in shotgun,, and especially the mini stuff. I'm no help with that. That's where you need to build a relationship with a dealer.

I live on the coast in So. Oregon and there are only two, mebbe three places to buy ammo here. I have had to go to Gold Beach to get some stuff, but the only thing I buy locally is powder and primers. I have purchased 45 Colt ammo, powder and primers at a Bi-Mart, but I've not seen the Mini Shells anywhere, as far north ad Coos Bay. Fred Myers has gone "PC" and sell no longer guns, ammo or reloading supplies (they didn't even sell gun magazines for several months) . There are a bunch of good gun shops in Medford and Grant's Pass so you'll just have to shop around. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS776US776&ei=6AaZXJzzCYfV-gSGp6eoDQ&q=ammunition+suppliers+in+so+oregon&oq=ammunition+suppliers+in+so+oregon&gs_l=psy-ab.3..33i299l3.237043.263822..264535...10.0..0.223.6872.0j41j3......0....1..gws-wiz.....0..0i67j0i131j0j0i10i67j0i10j0i22i30j33i22i29i30j33i160.kSse66j5rdg

My best move was to escape CA 9 years ago. I would have left much sooner but I had an excellent job for 25+ years and couldn't afford the move. I now live in clean, quiet, not-so-liberal So. Oregon and love it!

Thank you all for the responses and I appreciate them but really, I don't need the smarmy and ridiculous statements as "move" (and you know who you are p.s.! :x) and some others. I expected them but if you don't have anything positive to add, please don't!

I was born and raised in Southern Calif. and worked there for over 40 years and raised 3 children. Got divorced and came here and bought a 1/2 acre lot of land on a mountainside and built a 750-800 sq.ft. cabin. I met a wonderful lady here from Iowa after my 1st. year and married her.

We have no close neighbors here and we LOVE where we live and we can shoot on our property! I despise that Calif. has become so liberal but our rural county here votes mostly pro gun in every election and most folks here are proud to be gun owners.

Unfortunately, all our ex-hippie liberals from the '60's now who have taken over the San Francisco and Los Angeles metropolitan areas dictate what laws pass or don't. We have been fighting for years to establish a "State Of Jefferson" where Calif. would be divided into 2 separate states that would extend from just above Redding, Calif. to just above Medford, Or.

Calif. is as beautiful state as any in this great USA, though I have to admit Oregon is even prettier! :)

Folks, I know all about reloading, (I have no space in our little cabin for it), and that .45 Colt ammo is expensive. I started this thread JUST ASKING if ANYONE in Southern Oregon knew where I could purchase some and also the mini shot shells.

Also, I wanted to give kudos to a real gent here who lives in NORTHERN Oregon and PM'd me and said he would be willing to have ammo shipped to him if I ever got up his way. Thanks my friend and that's what the brotherhood of us gun lovers is all about!

I also want to thank the others that contributed positively to my thread!

One possible solution is to gt a PO Box or a Box at one of the "mailoxes are us" places and use thaa to order off the 'net. At least that's still legal in Oregon for now.

It won't be long before CA has ridiculous restrictions on reloading components too. I was born and spent most of my life in So. CA, and I too got really tired of the snarky "Move outta that Kommie state". Unfortunately the state is "ruled" by the large cities; LA, SF bay cities, and Sacramento. There are millions of "normal, sane" people living in CA and many do battle with the ultra-liberal government. Unfortunately, most of the oppressive laws are not voted on, they are made up and pushed through, many quietly, only to be publicized after the fact, and the "normal" citizens have no say (like the "buzzard vs lead bullet" fiasco). The large cities have the majority of votes and elect liberal representatives.

I had planned on retiring in Fortuna, CA, but after a trip to Brookings, OR, we changed our mind (we witnessed a young family, a young with and his wife and toddler, walk into a store and happily walk out 20 minutes later with Dads "birthday shotgun".). Right after I got my Oregon driver's license, I visited a small sporting goods store and left about 1/2 hour later with a brand new RIA 1911. We were fortunate that it was just me and my wife and all the kids were grown and gone, and the only ties we had were easily severed (we had our Church and friends and a house there, but we found a good Church here, made a lot of friends here, the house was easily sold and I'm not afraid to say I'm a reloader, shooter)...

Shipping or receiving ammo thru USPS...Illegal and not advisable.

Boxes – The USPS will not ship ammo of any kind. The USPS also does not permit private carriers to deliver to a P.O. Box. Therefore, online ammo retailers are effectively barred from shipping to PO Box addresses.

Sorry I forgot about that it's HAZMAT! Some of the ship&pack places will accept deliveries (so long as no shipping due or signature), but not in all states.

Hi WAYNO! :)

I forgot to mention that we only have a P.O Box as we don't live on a street as our road, (if you can call it that! :) ), to our cabin is an old logging road and there's no way we can get mail or packages delivered to us on our mountainside. We have to get our mail and packages down in town at our little post office and I did know that about ammo sent through the post office.

When we could order ammo online, we would have it delivered to a friend down in town who DOES live on a STREET!

Listen, it's no big deal if I find this ammo or not and originally just asked f there was anyone in Southern Oregon that knew of a store where I could. I'm glad I started this thread as it's been a very interesting read.

For all you guys that always come back with "move", if you saw where I live, even in this liberal state, you would love it like we do!

I hear ya on the not moving , or no big deal on the ammo. Sure you'll find some if you work at it.

I do not hear ya on the, no room to reload, as I have loaded in more places than I care to type. Maybe at your age the tools might be too much an investment, but we have more options now than there has been in my 65 years. Small, portable, inexpensive units abound. You have a picnic table in the yard?
Just a thought.

I started reloading in my "garage" (more like a 10'x10' storage area) with a stool, an 18" log, a mallet and my Lee Loader. Only reason I was in the garage was to keep out of the sun and prying eyes. 8) It doesn't take much room to pound out a few rounds, and 35 years later I still occasionally use my Lee Loaders to load up a box or two...

Hi,

Gene, you know about buying ammo out of state and bringing it in being on the verboten list now, too? I have no idea how they think they're gonna enforce that, but it's on the books after Prop 63.

I would also recommend a Lee loading kit for 45 Colt.. it doesn't have to take up more than some drawer or shelf space, and as you work on it you can gradually acquire more fancy stuff. I can load 45 Colt as cheaply as about 30 cents per round, and regularly shoot 100 rounds when I go out to the range. I find reloading to be a calming and relaxing activity.

I live just a few miles north of the OR/CA border. There is a "produce inspection station" just inside CA and I believe it's worthless. In 9 years I can't remember seeing any "inspections", vehicles in the "inspection area". When the station is open (business hours five days per week) I have always driven up to the station, was greeted by an officer with "good morning, do you have any produce?". I reply "Nope", and the officer says "Thank you, have a nice day", and I'm on my way. I have done this a few hundred times (in cars with both OR license plates and CA plates). I seriously doubt it any "Did you purchase ammo in OR?" questions would ever be asked...

Hi,

My point exactly. You must have the right kind of station in your neighborhood. Just wait until they're closed! Ok.. ;) The one closest to me is in Blythe, and while it's manned 24/7, I haven't been stopped there in over 20 years that I remember--just waved through. Last time I was thru, the lady was standing between two lanes, motioning folks thru with both arms: "Come on guys, let's keep it moving!" style. My next door neighbor is a truck driver, who goes from here to Phoenix and back every day. Depending on the run schedule he's on, he covers about 20 of the 24 hours in a day as to his crossing times at some time each year. He says there's always so much traffic on I-10--much of the time more trucks than cars--that he hasn't seen anyone stopped there in years, either. Regardless of the hour.

Both of you gents are correct! I have one inspection stop right after you enter Calif. and all they ask is about fruits, veggies and plants. Went through it about 1 1/2 months ago and it's the same.

We do all of our hardware or whatever and other supplies and grocery shopping in K-Falls as there's no tax and gasoline is 25 cents cheaper a gallon as they don't formulate gasoline for winter and summer like Calif. does and we save money doing so.

On another gun forum, a nice gent who lives in Southern Oregon, alerted me that there's a big gun show in K-Falls next month and almost any type of ammo, including.45 Colt and the mini shot shells will be available there. We'll be there! :D

Thanks for all the responses!

The days of going to get some ammo today to shoot today were over at least 10 years ago.

The words, stocking the pantry, have never been more true. They should have been noted in California over a year ago.
