I was told somebody makes a case trimmer that looks like a chop saw in a miniture size. The reason I'm asking is I have a 475 linebaugh in a bfr that has the cylinder altered at the rear to accept 45-70 cases cut down to length I have a couple of marlin lever action 45-70's and I reload for them. We have quite a few people locally that don't reload and a couple of years ago the game and fish made the 45-70 single shot's legal to use during muzzle loader season. Most use the hornady lever evulution ammo for muzzleloader hunting. The cases won't reload and crimp without altering your dies. So I don't use the hornady cases for reloading for 45-70 but they would be prime canidates for the 475 linebaugh if I could come up with a faster easier way to cut them down to the 475 length. I have been passing them up when picking up brass at the local shooting places because cutting them down is too much trouble with a regular hand case trimmer if I could find the chopsaw style trimmer I would get it and have a almost endless supply of brass for my pistol

Think this is it. Kind of expensive, huh :)

Check the die Co's for a 475 cut off die. You put it in the press, run the case up in it and saw off the end with a hacksaw. They make a lot of others but not sure about 475?

I cut them off using a drill press and hack saw blade at low speed. I use a snug fitting wood dowel inside the case (let it stick out a little bit) to keep from crushing and keeping it aligned, chucking the cartridge neck. After the hack job, trim it up in a case trimmer and good to go.

Hi,

Have you looked at Lee's offerings? I realize that's not the chop saw approach, but when chucked up in an electric drill, one can take a fair amount of brass off easily and quickly (Don't ask how I learned that!)

The drawback of the Lee trimmer is you don't have any "adjustment" possible like w/ the lathe style trimmers, so some research may be in order before deciding if it's right for the job.

That's an arrow saw, not a brass trimmer.

If you have a lot to trim this may be an option but you will still need a regualr trimmer for the final cut and finish.

But it would be fairly simple to remove the clamp and make a stop for the 45-70 brass. Then you will have to do the final trim. But it is much quicker than sawing off brass with a hacksaw thru a die.

Lyman at one time made an adapter for their trimmer to hook up a cordless drill. I used that to trim 30-30's that I formed for 30 Herrett. Then used trimmer regular way for final trim.
