I have three questions regarding annealing:

(1) Is annealing only for rifle cartridges or do you need to anneal pistol calibers as well?

(2) How often do cartridges need to be annealed?

(3) What process do you use to anneal your cartridges?

Thanks!

1) you can do it on straight wall, but unless it is a rare chambering - many will argue it is a waste of time

2) bottleneck rifle I do it for every 3-4 reloads

3) propane torch and pie plate with water method is what I use. I started with a temperature marker to make sure I got the temp right and don't even need that now. I have found if you get a dull glow...then you are too hot!

Hi,

I anneal rifle cases, but not handgun cases.

Every fifth loading is what I strive for.

Hold 'em between a couple of fingers and rotate the neck over a propane torch until I feel the case getting hot. That's usually just before any color is seen. Then they get placed in a pan of water...

I do it every three or so loadings.

Per John Barsnes, using a candle, hold the case with bare fingers in the middle, have the flame just touch the neck. Roll brass between the fingers, when it gets HOT, quench it with a wet towel.

I do like Rick Courtright but I drop mine into a bucket of water. The only caliber I shoot that has ever needed it is 7 WSM. With annealing I get 10 or more loads until the necks split. Without I get about 5. I try to do it every 3 loads.
