Well,it's been my experience in my guns that IMR 4227 likes to be in a "tight boiler", i.e. the powder column should be darn close to the base of the seated bullet. Some published data even lists compressed charges.

I'll agree with flatgate. In my 45 Colt, the most accurate/best shooting load was near max where the powder came right near the base of the bullet.

From Hodgdon's 26th, IMR4227:

44 mag/300 gr bullet = 18.0-20.0 gr/1056-1238 fps/31,600-37,700 CUP

41 mag/210 gr bullet = 19.0-21.0 gr/1169-1319 fps

357 mag/158 gr bullet = 13.5-14.5 gr/1239-1359 fps/30,100-35,000 CUP

I've used a lot of IMR4227 in my .44 mags. It shoots great especially with compressed charges, heavy crimp.

Coffee Pot: Do you use magnum primers or regulars? I have heard both for this powder.

I like 20.5gr of IMR4227 and a 210gr JSP in the 41mag, makes 1200fps out of a 4 5/8" barrel and recoil and muzzle blast is not too bad.
I use 22.5gr of IMR 4227 and a 300gr Sierra JSP or Hornady XTP in the 45 Colt, great accuracy, tremendous knockdown power on big whitetails.

I've been using the Winchester primers that are marked for either Standard or Magnum loads. They seem to be OK. IMR4227 still leaves a very small amout of unburned powder. That's quite common with it though. Never tried straight 'Magnum' primers in it. My powder is quite old and I use the old specs for loading it. They call for a standard primer.

What Flatgate said. I hope you are a youngster as that is a lot of "stuff" to put down the chute. A bunch of it would likely land on the luggage rack of my hearse.

I have found a heavy charge of 4227 behind a hand cast 320 gr. bullet is very accurate out of my 4 5/8 Blackhawk, I use the WLP primer behind it.

But anyway , with magnums my default starting point is what ever is about 95% load density with particular bullet. It has always given at least decent accuracy. Work up to compressed to either fine tune accuracy , or if more vel is desired. While I typically use the WLP, standard primers for magnum-ish loads.

While not initially listed by OP , in .45LC in the neighborhood of 20.0 with a 250-255 cast will give aprox 1000fps with aprox 20K pressure.

Ironically , if loading outside usual parmeters in a low pressure application (ie .38spl +P , etc) a magnum primer will help with consistancy.

FWIW , since Hogdons took over IMR , the 4227 has been identical for either IMR or H on the label. Supposedly they will currently only market it under IMR label.

My favorite .45 Colt load. My chrono shows 1050fps out of 5 1/2" barrel. Taffin states that it is safe in all modern .45 Colt revolvers. I use it in both my .45 Colt flattops (medium frame) and .45 Colt BHs (large frame).

I have data for 240g SWC and .44mag and .44Spec, and .357 158g SWC... but not any jacketed bullet data of any weight.

I always use a CCI Magnum primer with IMR-4227 for consistency.
