On the left is Charles Morton Black, my great uncle and name sake. At his side he has a little half stock 40 calibre percussion rifle. The well heeled, unknown gentleman on the right has a Model 97 Winchester. The pic was made in the early 30's in front of Uncle Charlie's house. Sometime during the late 20's he walked cross country from his home at Joy, Kentucky to Birdsville and bought this rifle from a gunsmith there. The walk would have been 15-16 miles. Uncle Charlie was a very good shot an a master trapper. When he died in 1954 the rifle was passed down to his son, Russell. It has killed many a hog for butchering. Russell's son, Jimmy had been after his dad for years to trade him the rifle. One day he finally relented. Russell saddled his horse and rode the 6 miles to Jimmys home where he traded Jim the rifle for a Remington 22 and a watermelon out of Jim's patch. He got on his horse and headed home but before he got there he dropped the melon and naturally it busted open. He got down, ate the melon, climbed back in the saddle and rode home. About 20 years ago Jim was kind enough to pass the old cap lock rifle to me. It's in pretty rough shape but has a very special place on the mantle in my man cave. I wouldn't take a farm in Texas for it.

I love this stuff I'm only 53 but our young generation doesn't seem to care about their heritage.

Tell that story to Doug Turnbull, see what he can do?

Tom, nice picture. I like those. The only thing I got of my dad's after his death was an old '97. That will go to my son. I need to get it cleaned up some.
