Hi,

Caught this story this morning on the phone, and had to get to a real computer to see it better. Looks like our infamous ozone hole over Antarctica is almost the smallest it's been in the last three decades. Heavens, what are we to worry about next?

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-49714987

Fortunately, it looks like the Chinese may be stepping up to the plate to produce enough bad stuff to get it back to normal! [/sarc]

I am glad they are repairing it. Thank you science for recognising this problem and helping us to find the solution. Like global warming the problems associated with the loss of ozone are accumulated over time. Ultra violet rays have the capability to destroy plants and animals and can cause skin cancer, and cataracts to human beings. Existence of life on earth is possible only because of the presence of ozone layer around the earth.

quote>Ozone is a molecule that is composed of three oxygen atoms. It is responsible for filtering out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

In an unpolluted atmosphere, this cycle of production and decomposition is in equilibrium. But chlorine and bromine-containing chemicals released by human activity have unbalanced the process, resulting in a loss of ozone that is at its greatest in the Antarctic spring in September/October. <end quote

CO2 is what protects us from ultraviolet;
You are buying too much nonsense from the "sighentists" who spew nonsense to collect BIG governmnet grants.

Aren't all environmental problems on our earth related to population? we talk about this and that destroying the earth but doesn't it all boil down to too many people? no one wants to talk about that.

"we talk about this and that destroying the earth but doesn't it all boil down to too many people?"

That's what happens when we provide vaccinations, clean water, and nutritious food to the "turd world"--they breed themselves out of a place to live and trash entire countries.

Very interesting that they talk about equilibrium! That concept works for “climate change” also.

Pesky thing...I wonder where it's got to?

Frankly, I don't think any of this applies to climate control, I don't believe for a minute humans can do a thing about it, or there wouldn't be hurricanes, if humans could change the climate. They could tell when or where the last hurricane, was going to come on land, just miles away, but they can tell us what's going to happen in 50 years. Even AOC's manager had to admit, there green plan had nothing to do with climate, it was about the socialist agenda. First truth I've heard in a long time coming out of a democrats mouth.

The one 'fact' in all this is that in about 300 years people will be laughing about what we thought we knew. This is a absolute certainty if we look at history.

Hmmm....if ozone is what protects us why did the EPA enact regulations to eliminate ozone?
Remember smog? It should have protected us.

Please read up on Ozone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone start here Ozone in Earth's atmosphere and then read Importance to surface-dwelling life on Earth and then Low level ozone and finally Low level ozone in urban areas.

That will answer your question and give you a good foundation of information to understand what humans are doing to the environment with regard to ozone.

Of course if you would rather play politics, I can't help you with that.

Not playing politics. Rather, common sense.
If ozone is good why did the EPA pass regs to eliminate it?
Smog should have protected us. Makes sense, does it not?

Hmm...I think I will edit that Wiki article.....

Hi,

My BIL works for UCDavis in the extension department, and he knows everything. Just ask him! Plus, being a UC employee, I think he's sworn to sign on with whatever the latest fad is, no matter how screwy. The topic of ozone and the layer and the hole and the incredible claims of the importance of that hole leaking all the atmosphere into space or whatever horrid thing is supposed to happen came up one Thanksgiving.

He was quick to inform me there are two kinds of ozone. The good one seals the hole, the bad one smogs up our cities. To me, O3 is O3 and that's the end of the story. Are there isotopes of ozone? So I posed a "problem" to him regarding the last 12 oz can of R-12 I had 20 or so years ago:

What would happen if I just poked a hole in that can and let 'er rip, straight up. It would have to escape the lower altitudes where it would surely be too busy destroying all the ozone near the ground, especially if I turned it loose in Los Angeles County on a Friday afternoon, before it could ever get high enough to enter the jet stream in the Northern Hemisphere, jump to the Southern Hemisphere's jet stream, then hop off that for the commuter flight to Antarctica and "the hole." At that point how much would be left to tear up the hole some more?

He spent the better part of T-day afternoon and evening between turkey dinner and turkey sandwiches researching it. Best he could come up with is "It's a theory, and nobody's done the testing to prove or disprove it."

Ok... kinda makes one think the LAST people to be making laws are lawmakers!
