The average non gun person tells gun people things like guns are dangerous and are more likely to get used against you than against the bad guy. LIE
They average non gun person tells gun people that guns are not capable about being used against a bear, and that bear spray is FAR more effective. Even, Fish and Game biologists, will tell you the same thing. LIE In short, even biologists care more about the bears and wild game than they care about you and want to discourage you from carrying a firearm, and instead depending on pepper spray. I'm sure someone will speak to it.

This is well worth the read. https://www.ammoland.com/2019/08/handgu ... z5wdJB1jXk

I couldn't find it but the original article I read took it up to over 70 cases with very high effectiveness. I can copy and past the whole thing but concerned about band width (which I know nothing about) Should be very encouraging. Found it.

My old model Ruger Super Blackhawk revolver with Keith 250 grainers makes about 1250 ft-lbs of energy. The old black powder Sharps buffalo gun chambered in .45-70 government made about 1300 ft-lbs.

As long as they're law abiding, I'm OK with it. :)

I'll admit my "bear experiences" are very limited BUT my firearms experience far outweighs that. The major problem with using handguns for bear defense is proper shot placement rather than energy of the bullet.
While walking the mountains during elk scouting expeditions, I felt well equipped with a 4 5/8" SBH loaded with Nosler soft point bullets. Colorado black bears are neither monstrous nor exceedingly aggressive so I felt comfortable with this combination. I could hit a paper plate @ 25 yards 100% in most any lighting conditions on the range. Knowing full well that accuracy would degrade when excited, I felt this was about the max I could reasonably handle.
Comparatively, I can instinct shoot a pump shotgun at least that well w/o even considering "aiming". That's the issue and I understand others might not have the skills to use a shotgun that well. There's a compromise: the convenience of a handgun and the disadvantage of toting a long gun vs the higher energy dump of a shotgun .

I wonder if Peta would support the right to Arm Bears?

The article is all BS=he cherry picks his data. I can cite ten cases where people used pistols and died. Would that mean pistols are ineffective? Look at Herrero's studies. I think he has over 2000 cases now!

But, it is much more "MACHO" to walk around a campground with a "big ole magnum" on your hip!

Just thinking from 20 years as a wildlife biologist in grizzly country!

Would you rather have that magnum on your hip in bear country or not?

Much is dependent on how good a shot the bear is and how much ammo he/she is carrying.

You know all these bear stories about what to carry kind of amuses me. I understand it`s now legal to have a gun in a national park. I worked in Yosemite in 1960 and the Grand Tetons in 1961. Both had a lot of bears and it was a everyday thing seeing them. In the tetons I even was assigned to picking up the garbage cans in the campgrounds and turnouts and literally almost fighting bears over the garbage. I guess our betters considered us disposable as the garbage as back then having guns within the park was illegal and a big no-no!
Maybe I should sue them!
Somewhere I have a good picture. We were off work one sunday and I was lounging around my tent. A tent mate was about 30 yards away sitting reading against a tree. I saw a bear walking towards him from the opposite side of the tree. Instead of hollering at him I grabbed my hawkeye camera and got a nice picture of him and the bear running away from each other in opposite directions!

Pretty poor description of the article in the title, on my part. I've corrected that, so maybe a few of you will actually read this interesting article and have a lot of questions answered in your own mind.
