I posted this story on FaceBook and folks seemed to like it, so I'll run it up here.

My hunting companions, all dead now, were my son-in-law, his dad, and his grand father. His grandfather, old Mr. Vick, had once been a commercial hunter, supplying the restaurants around Water Valley, Mississippi.

On day we had been out in the woods, late fall, still warm days. We had had no luck that day, and began coming out of the woods. Mr. Vick related how he had had a big old cottonmouth approach him as he waited for the bushy tails. He related how he had taken his pocket knife and cut a branch big enough to club the coottonmouth to death.

"Why didn't you shoot him, Grandaddy?" asked my son-in-law.

"Didn't want to waste a shell," was his reply.

The other problem is you scare off all the near by game by shooting the snake.

You can kill a snake by just stepping on its head and pushing down real hard.... the only problem is when the ground is real soft and the snake decides to wrap around your leg.....
there is a reason I know this.....

I don't care to try to step on the head of an angry cottonmouth!

There is a reason you don't step on a snake.

Hi,

Just in case anyone ever has the urge, trying to kill a scorpion on soft ground while wearing flip flops produces a similar reaction by the intended "victim." Another from the "Don't ask me how I know this" file.

I have stomped a rattlesnake or two when wearing appropriate boots but not sure I'd try it on a cottonmouth. They are of a nasty disposition, in my experience.

Had that been me, I would have been all out of shells, and every animal in 5 miles would have been spooked.

I have even run away from perfectly good bungee cords on occasion.

i don't like snakes.
