I have a 30-40 Krag that needs a repair to the bolt safety. It's loose and “flops” back and forth. Do any of you know of a gunsmith that could help me with this?
Thanks,
John

Send a PM to our member called 2dogs. If he can't do it, he'll likely know who can.

Krag's aren't all that hard to work on and parts are fairly available. I'd suggest if you took your bolt apart you'd find the safety detent (the spring-loaded ball between the shaft of the safety and the flag) is not moving freely, or not engaging the bolt sleeve. If the ball is present but not moving freely, I'd suggest soaking in some solvent (WD-40, diesel, kerosene, etc.); otherwise, your best bet might be to buy a new safety.

Thanks Nika. The back corner of this safety looks like it's been buggered up. I haven't researched where to get a new one, but I can start down that road. And my Son is a fearless young man that will take it on. Whenever I go very far the springs, balls, and pawls end up in my overhauls.

To follow up, research indicated I needed a new safety lever and found an excellent parts source.* I was able to get a new safety lever and my son and I were able to install it. It works perfectly.
*Send me a PM if you need a safety lever source.

THANKS NikA Grandpa had exactly what I needed...a new safety lever. Other than the 5 holes somebody drilled in the left side of the receiver to mount a cheap 3/4" scope it's back to original functional configuration. It's kinda fun to tell kids that you could mail order these for $25 back in the day so finding one with just 5 holes drilled in the receiver ain't too bad.
