I would LOVE to go to Houston to see this. Sadly it's impossible, but I'm tickled to know that this restoration has been done. The Control Room has been restored to look just like it did 50 years ago when humans first set foot on the moon.

If anyone is in the area, please do go see this and support their effort. It's truly a remarkable piece of history!

Regards, Pete

Thanks for the update!

When we toured NASA and that control room last October, they were in the middle of the restoration and all the consoles were wrapped in plastic. It was still awe-inspiring to be in such an historic place.

There was and old episode of Larry the Cable Guy Made in America on this past weekend in which he visited both Mission Control rooms.
He commented everything in the original was made by Radio Shack.

The Apollo museum at Kennedy is one of my favorite places in Earth. The intro recreation of a launch is amazing as are the Saturn V and the lander hanging over you in the main hall.

We toured that complex a few years back. I remember them saying today's smart phones have more tech in them that that room did.

I remember that my Mom had a set of those plastic coffee cups with the burlap fabric visible on them. That was pretty high tech back then.

I worked at the Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake City, south of Houston, back in the mid 90's.

Once I had my security clearance, I could enter just about every building on the site.

Got to see things the general public never gets to see.

Did you know there were actually two Mission Control rooms?

One control room had green consoles, the other had blue consoles.

The green room was used during DOD missions (military) and the blue room was used for scientific missions.

During some missions there would be people sitting in the blue room looking at consoles that had just random information blinking, while the mission was being controlled from the green room.

The blue room was the one the press was usually allowed to film.

As an electrical contractor, I spent time in just about every building and down in the tunnel system that connects the buildings.

Helped wire the new Mission Control room.

If you are ever there or see it on tv, I wired the mission clocks seen in the upper corner of the main scene.

One of the most interesting jobs I ever had.

I saw an article today in the Wall Street Journal about the restoration. My wife and I would love to see it. The article mentioned having to 3D print some items like the ashtrays on the chairs. They also mentioned that the restoration actually misses a bit of reality in that everything is clean and not coated in tobacco smoke films. One of the controllers noted that the vents were usually pretty black from smoking. I doubt that we will make it this year, but maybe next year.
