It's only a custom shop for what they want to make. Don't get the idea that you can send a gun to them to be customized.

It appears to be more a 'specialty shop' rather than a 'custom' shop.

$2500 ain't a lot for a truly custom 1911 ....... depending of course on exactly what was customized / improved.

YES!!! Finally! Hopefully their options and choices and available parts etc. will grow. I bet it will succeed. Smith and Wesson and others have had “custom shop” choices available for years now. It’s about time Ruger got into the game.

It will only succeed if folks buy stuff from it!

Hi,

If one buys something from the Custom Shop, will it have to be sent right back to be done right like so many of the standard versions? Methinks the ongoing QC issue will become far more important than ever if "custom" is to catch on.

I checked with a buddy there when I got the announcement yesterday.

Won't be a true custom shop, where you can order a gun built to your preferences on features, or send your own Ruger in for custom after-buy work.

It'll be more of a "High-Grade Shop", where you don't buy what you want to buy, you buy what they want to sell.
Higher-grade guns, but they decide what the package will be.

I think we need to give this a chance. Like any new endeavor, it will evolve to more of what the customer wants. Hopefully in time they start doing more custom type work that people want, not just selling higher end models.

It seems that Ruger has a communication problem. Custom says one thing to the populace, while they mean something totally different.

I think it's interesting Ruger is starting with two of the most- customized firearms in the market. This is a great venture - and deserves the support of Ruger fans. Who knows where it might lead?

One thing is for certain: the competition in this market is fierce. I wish them much success!

As DPris says,, it isn't a true custom shop. But,, just like S&W or Springfield,, they are using the "named" competition shooters to help sell a newer product. Many folks do follow these guys,, and since Ruger has a Competition Team now,,, they can offer a gun,, built to that person's "custom" idea. Think like the S&W JM model DA revolver,, or the Springfield TGO (Robbie Leatham) guns.
But it is a move in a different direction,, and hopefully,, it may lead to other good stuff.

That's what I said in the second post in this thread.

CC,
I was clarifying what you said, via an inside contact.

Ruger tried something roughly similar before, with their "design studio".
Expensive Rugers that the customer had no choice in, take what the company offered or don't go there.

This sounds like it's off to the same start- people getting excited after waiting decades for a Ruger Custom Shop where they could order a custom-made gun to their specs, or send their trusty old Ruger in for a custom upgrade.

Important to understand here that it's ONLY Ruger's "High-Grade Department", and really shouldn't be called a custom shop.

They WILL be putting out deluxe guns & those should be quite nice.
Denis
