One of the things I liked about Carl was his good sense of humor.

Carl had some Czech and German ancestry. And of course, gray hair, a big mustache, and he loved to ski and drink beer.

I found this pic online years ago, I think on eBay. I posted it on the forum and said the guy was Flatgate. The good-spirited banter went back and forth with various folks chiming in. At one point I said that we should start referring to Carl by his Indian name, "Dances with Trees". He was always a good sport.

Sad news indeed, explains why I haven't read his postings in way too long. He did welcome me to the forum years ago. Those of you who had the pleasure of knowing him were truly blessed with his friendship...

Carl, 'Flatgate' and this forum have been an important and interesting part of my life for many years. I am sad at the loss and hope as a tribute to him that the forum continues in good standing for many more years to come. :(

Yes, this is sad news. I didn’t have the opportunity to meet him in person, but he did answer some beginner questions way back when.

Wyandott Jim, Yes this forum is more than just guns, and yes, Jimbo357mag, I also hope this forum continues as a tribute to him for many years to come.

I didn’t know any of this stuff about him, his skiing or the geology background. It’s sad. RIP sir.

I never met this man either. Feeling like we've lost a Founding Father in more ways than one. RIP Flatgate. - DixieBoy

Flatgate! Carl was a very close & dear friend of mine as he was to a lot of people. He & I spent a lot of time together went to two NRA shows back East & the NRA show in Phoenix, AZ in 2009 where I was able to bring home the NRA Best Educational Award with Carl's help!

Carl spent many nights in my home always staying up talking & showing off our Rugers!
He made me start displaying mine & John's (Ruger1441) guns for others to enjoy and educate the public.

It is with tears on the key board I write the post, He wanted adopt my son Joel because my Son would pull out his Rugers & talk Rugers fine points to Carl (Which He Already Knew) but they discussed them. Now Joel will be displaying in Tulsa this Fall.

I could go on for a long timeabout my friend, But the last time I seen him in his home in Star Valley he was struggling & I know he is in a better place with his parents he missed dearly, He had no children & was his parents only child.

RIP Old Friend!

He was one of the good guys and will be missed. I enjoyed my time with him at some shows and at my home.

I met Carl a few times and once gave him a zip lock bag with some Callshot 44 Special brass just for being a great guy. He also reamed out my 45 Colt cylinder for me. I hope to meet him someday at the great range in the sky. Steve
