Burglar's relative says: "He could have used a warning first..."

From WTTC News in Dallas, we get this heartwarming tale of a long-time criminal, 33 year old Deyfon, who tried to climb in a window of a Texas home.

The elderly owner occupant saw him and fired one shot, ending Deyfon’s criminal career.

As the police do, they came by to investigate, gathered the corpse, then went to notify Deyfon's family of his unfortunate demise.

It seems that the family was very upset, because they showed up at the scene. "He could have used a warning," Lakesha Thompson, Pipkins' sister-in-law, complained. "He could have let him know that he did have a gun on his property and he would use it in self-defense."

COMMENT FROM THE SIDELINE:

"That's certainly true, Lakesha. He could also have invited him in and given him a beer, then helped him cart the TV out to the curb. Unfortunately for Deyfon, Texas is a Castle Doctrine State, and the homeowner chose to shoot Deyfon, as is right and proper to do in Texas."

"For that matter, Lakesha, you could have warned Deyfon. Why didn't YOU tell him: 'Deyfon, yo' needs to quit breakin' into dem peoples' houses and stealin' dey stuff. Else somebody gonna pop a cap in yo' butt.'"

He GOT a warning. If he chose to ignore the sound of the safety coming off, that's his problem.

But seriously, he proved once again the validity of Maverick's Law:

"You don't walk on the railroad track, you don't get hit by the train."

What could be simpler?

Well, if you take what she said literally, she was right. :-)

Maybe a warning was given? Lakeshsa wasn't there, or was/is she an accomplice?

I don't "warn" coyotes and other varmints before I pop them. Why should the 2 legged vermin expect a warning?

Perhaps had the homeowner been given a warning they would have made other plans than shooting.

Work with cattle you take the chance of being kicked.
Drive a truck you take the chance of a jack knife.
Weld, you take the chance of being blinded.
Work as an accountant you take the chance of carpel tunnel.
Work as a burglar you take the chance of being shot.

As someone wiser than I always put it- you buy your ticket, you take your chances. This guy's luck ran out and society benefited. If that makes me mean spirited and hard hearted... I'll take my chances.

Mighty generous of that old boy to share his ammo in this time of shortage. Some folks just don't know how to say "Thank you."

Oh---and a very merry Christmas. HO HO HO.

I suppose we should all have this sign in front of, on the sides of and behind our homes

Warning, homeowner is armed and deadly

I just realized I have never heard of anyone being shot while filling out a job application. Think about it. :?

I hope the home owners house didn't take any damage from the bullet or the mess. House repairs aren't cheap these days. The family ought to be happy the homeowner doesn't send them a bill for any damage or repairs. After all, the break in was what caused the whole thing.
