Since Contenders breakin I have been contemplating installing a security camera system. Harbor Freight has a 4 camera day night system which is on sale off and on for less than $400. Anyone tried this system? Is it any good?

You should also look at Sam's Club.
They have some in that price range.

Sam....Be sure to read all the customer reviews on their web site regarding the hard drive failures after 7 to 8 months, bad info in manual, lack of assistance from HF, etc..

Looks like they are dumping this system now for around $279.00

Buyer beware...

I've been researching all the brands in the last four months with getting some good input from experts in the electronic field. I was convinced that Samsung units that Sams sells has the best quality, warranty, user friendliness, and the best bang for the buck. JMHO. Trapper :)

I have heard of some security camera systems that the homeowner can monitor, from a website, while they are away. I would like to do more research in that area.

This place has some decent stuff:

For a good system it's going cost a pretty penny. My recorder alone cost $600, good all weather cameras about $80, or so, each.

A good system with a couple weatherproof cameras, monitor, DVR, cable and internet features will run not much more than one of the current Ruger pistols or revolvers or a flat screen TV

You either pay up front to protect your stuff or you pay when it gets boosted while you are at work

I bought a Zmodo system with 8 channel capabilities and 4 indoor/outdoor cameras included from woot.com a while back. They have them off and on, it's one of those sites you have to check every day to see what they have. I've played around with it a little bit but haven't actually installed it. So far it has been easy to set up and use, and is capable of being viewed over the web from a computer or smartphone.
The Zmodo systems are also available at newegg.com, and the user reviews on that site are generally as good as you can find. Be careful, some of their systems are listed both with and without hard drives, so that you can choose your own drive if you want.

AR15.com has section specifically for home security and the info to be found is top notch.... Nothing like the GD section.
